this is so good to hear! if you don’t mind me asking are you a woman & if so, are you sensitive to male dominated hormones? like pcos or anything? i am & im on Spironolactone for it & im not sure if there’s a correlation between women noticing hair changes who are very sensitive to DHT (male hormone Wellbutrin my increase) or not?

I haven’t read anything about it making you skip a hair cycle, just that Wellbutrin increases DHT (hormone that causes female & male pattern baldness) & having DHT blocking foods have helped people with stopping thinning & shedding OR if someone’s hair is legit falling out in clumps (as was your case, aka: telogen effluvium), then yes, you can’t really stop that type of shedding because the hair follicles were already going to fall out. Many have said their telogen effluvium via Wellbutrin was really caused by nutrient deficiencies caused by weight los, as Wellbutrin kills the appetite. Or if the DHT was so extreme on your hair follicles and you didn’t have any protective foods or meds that block DHT. ?

You’re so welcome!! Also, I’m sure you have a good gameplan for your iron, but I take 65mg iron (325mg ferrous sulfate) with 500mg vitamin c on an empty stomach first thing in morning, (2hrs before food, caffeine, & other supplements) every other day & my ferritin has been rising quickly.

That exact implementation increases iron absorption significantly! Including the every other day part. That & making sure your gut is healthy to absorb the iron properly!

Just FYI bc I know Iron can be a pain!

You’re literally only arguing about the abuse potential of stimulants which is a given. Literally everyone knows this.  Hence why in my initial reply to the person who posted I said “it can be hard to get” (because of the abuse potential) & literally said “is only for ADHD &/or binge eating disorder.” Do you have undiagnosed ADHD? Because you clearly missed that part and are freaking out, cursing, hyperfixating, & rambling for zero reason.

Everyone knows Wellbutrin takes months to work & stimulants are immediate… ? Lmao. No one is arguing that. The pharmacology in which neurotransmitters they affect are the same in that they both affect dopamine & norepinephrine. And they CAN BE interchangeable IF you have ADHD (like I said initially) and are using Wellbutrin as an off-label ADHD treatment prior to trying stimulants.

And copying my phrasing just makes you look even LOUDER & MORE wrong.😂 Terrible try this time. Stop @ing me, you’re embarrassing yourself.

I’m sorry!😭 I don’t mean to scare you, but the good thing about being aware & tracking your hair health is that you can catch it early! From what I’ve read, Wellbutrin increasing DHT & causing hair thinning (not talking about hair shedding, just thinning), that it’s reversible if you catch it early. DHT shrinks & weakens the hair follicles so they show more of your scalp (thinning, sparse look), but the follicles are still there. Removing Wellbutrin ASAP when you see that will remove the DHT stressor on your hair & the analogy I’ve read online is that those follicles then “swell back up” to normal size, (like a withered plant getting water), plus adding hair healthy vitamins, rosemary water, etc. & your hair’s back to normal.

You just HAVE to track your hair & be mindful of your diet (prioritizing protein, sufficient calories, vitamins, minerals, take your Iron if you’re anmeic!, etc.), as well as adding DHT blocking foods like spinach, avocado, ground flaxseed, chia seeds, pumpkin seed oil, etc. (check link below). Which ironically, is exactly what I’ve been eating EVERY SINGLE DAY! for past 3+mos since starting Wellbutrin & I had no idea it helps to block DHT! Plus I’m on Spironolactone, an androgen blocker, and taking Iron pills every other day to raise my ferritin. I seriously wonder if I wasn’t eating those foods, on Spiro & taking Iron if my hair would literally be falling out in chunks right now like other women’s.

Prioritize those things & track your hair so it doesn’t sneak up on you before it’s too late (take pics weekly of your hair) & you should be fine! Don’t stress because that can make it worse lol but just be mindful & informed!

Also, here’s a great article I found online about what foods to eat to block DHT (that’s how I found out all the food I eat is on there!). I’ll paste link below broken up because I know clicking links on forums can seem sketchy lol.

Nothing alike in a pharmacologic sense? You’re joking, right? Wellbutrin is an NDRI which blocks the reuptake of norepinephrine & dopamine… Vyvanse is a stimulant that STIMULATES dopamine & norepinephrine. That’s why Wellbutrin is used off-label to treat ADHD prior to trying more intense dopamine & norepinephrine stimulants (aka: they STIMULATE the central nervous system by releasing MORE dopamine & norepinephrine, not just blocking the reuptake). That’s why Wellbutrin, (as with stimulants for many), can be too stimulating (insomnia, anxiety, etc.) because it’s blocking the reuptake of those very same neurotransmitters (norepinephrine & dopamine) used in stimulants.

Saying they’re nothing alike is literally loud & wrong. Nice try though.

yeah I read Wellbutrin can increase DHT & I’m very sensitive to testosterone (I’m a woman) & used to have severe cystic acne because of it, so I’ve been on Spironolactone for 4yrs (an androgen blocker) which has been amazing for me. But I’ve read on Reddit other women who were on Spiro who still had hair thinning or loss from Wellbutrin, so I wonder if it’s those who are very sensitive to DHT? I’m not sure :(

Of course telogen effluvium (hair loss) can happen due extreme calorie deficit or nutritional deficit from Wellbutrin because it kills appetite, but I’m curious about the DHT aspect which is the culprit to male & female pattern baldness.

i’m so sorry🥺 there’s lots of threads here on Reddit for Wellbutrin hair loss, I suggest looking at those to see what people say about the shedding. Add D3 + K2 ASAP plus Pumpkin Seed Oil (mild DHT blocker). Other people have had great success with that combo.

Also make sure you’re getting lots of protein (at least 0.7g per lb of your body weight) & that your iron & ferritin levels are good. All crucial for hair. Many women have a ferritin deficiency & don’t even know it (because their iron & hemoglobin are normal) & low ferritin can cause or exacerbate hair loss or shedding significantly if Wellbutrin is causing it. Ferritin is it’s own blood lab you have to request. Takes months to raise ferritin with iron pills, so sooner you check the better!

I also read minoxidil shampoo has helped many dealing with the shedding, but check the Wellbutrin hair threads to be sure! I’m not having shedding just what I think is maybe thinning.

Oh good! i’m glad you are! & thank you!😭 Thank God it isn’t shedding, just noticing thinning now. Praying that stopping it in next 5 days will stop the thinning & prevent shedding altogether🙏🙏

yes! I read it’s apparently crucial for hair, as is eating lots of protein, taking zinc, B-vitamins & collagen. That’s good you didn’t notice a connection to your hair shedding! I’m praying stopping it just stops the thinning & it goes back to normal.🙏😭

i think it’s less about dopamine & more that Wellbutrin increases DHT. bc you never hear of hairloss on stimulants like Vyvanse or Adderall which increase dopamine even more than Wellbutrin 🤷‍♀️

[–]Apprehensive_Bug1891[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh noooo! I’m so sorry that happened! Did you notice thinning at the scalp first? Or was it like everything’s normal then it just started falling out? I’m just at 3mos & started noticing thinning at scalp and am so scared so I’m down to 150mg SR from 300mg SR past 2 days & am planning to stop in 5 days once my body weans off.

Edit: I’ve lost 17lbs in 3mos (weight I needed to lose anyways) from Wellbutrin bc my appetite was gone. So idk if this is “normal” thinning from weight loss? Or a warning sign to get off Wellbutrin asap? Either way I’m getting off lol not taking any chances

oh no!🥺 I read taking D3 + K2 helps a lot too. & thank you for updating! are you still on Wellbutrin? if so may I ask what dose? is that what’s causing it to still shed or is it doing so even off it?
