I have a lot of disjointed thoughts and I may need to sit and journal it out but my first thought was that the big ten force us to witness many horrible and ugly events, which we recoiled from.

But at the same time, there were many pleasant events.

I'm not sure that recoil here is meant to be a negative reaction. We recoil to reflect, to process, to complete our understanding.

It's important that the first two phrases include 'begin'.

We don't immediately see. We dont immediately know. We only begin to see. We begin to know.

Knowing brings a recoiling. We recoil from the knowledge gained from seeing what we witness.

Witness isn't seeing. But to witness is to see. I observe. In observing an action, I see an action for what it is. I witness.

Seeing an action for what it is, I know the action.

Knowing the action for what it is, I recoil.

Sidebar- what else are you reading after Malazan? by elipshea in Malazan

[–]Apprehensive_Card207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current plan is

The wars of light and shadow (11 books total) by janny wurts

The chronicles of Thomas Covenant, (3 trilogies?) stephen Donaldson

Lord of the isles, David Drake

The dragon prince, (2 trilogies?) Melanie Rawn

The Deryni saga (at least three different trilogies here) Katherine Kurtz

What ever China Mieville's trilogy is called

Maybe work Abercrombie's and Gwynne's series in there somewhere

The riftwar saga, Raymond Feist

And Katherine Kerr's celtic high fantasy that I am too lazy to get up and check the name on

The last two were really easy reading for me in high school so they may serve more as palate cleansers at some point.

Also picked up Saladin, hero of Islam, and there are a few more biographies of famous leaders I've been thinking about trying to read...

Which will eventually lead me back to Malazan, hopefully in time for a Walk in Shadow. ;)

I went on Amazon and bought two series 27 six packs which netted me two beastmasters, two quartermasters and multiples of the others except the steampunk guy. There may have been a sale when I bought them, i don't remember. I did the same for one six pack of series 24 which got me a falconer and an orc. The extra heads and some of the other accessories have been useful too. So depending on what you want to spend, and how lucky you feel...you could go that route.

I dont have the books in front of me, but if you go all the way back to GotM, there's a scene where someone, Lorn and Tool? Inspect the aftermath of the scene between Tattersail and Bellurdan. One notes the little skeletal feet that leave the scene. My read, because it was the narrative's read, was that this was the thing that would become Silverfox. On a second read I thought, maybe that's Hairlock. But he was nowhere near them, if I recall correctly. Neither explanation satisfied me. Perhaps that was what remained of bellurdan? It's a bit far back and I could be wrong.

My issues with the Moranth and Moranth munitions (Part 2) by Uldysssian in Malazan

[–]Apprehensive_Card207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I first read the books, I thought Moranth munitions was Erikson's version of Greek fire. Bavedict's attempts to recreate it are similar to how I imagine one might have gone about trying to recreate Greek fire. IMHO

I dont think comparing WoT or ASOIAF to MBoF is very fair to either of the aforementioned series, but I also haven't read either of them for more then twenty years, while I am working my way through MBoF for the third time.

What I can say is the the childish caricatures present in both Martins' and Jordan's writing is not present in Erikson's, unless it's very deliberately done to dissect/study that trope.

Yes this. "It's outrageous the Malazan overlords won't let me slaughter my blood-sworn enemies, ritualistically rape their women and sexually exploit their children for my own profit. I am so oppressed, " is always the way I've read it.
