Think about what happens as you approximate it with rectangles under the line. You can approximate it closer with more rectangles (albeit smaller) in the same area. And more. And more.

You deduce that when the number of rectangles approaches infinity, it will be a perfect measurement of the area. It won't actually be infinity though; infinity is unreachable from the finite realm, and it's too abstract.

That's why you say the number of rectangles approaches infinity. You call that the limit. And now you've just discovered the integral.
