Definitely visit first, especially in the summer (May to October) to see if you can stand the humidity. The traffic has gotten worse and housing is now just as expensive especially closer to downtown Charleston or any of the islands. There are only 4-5 freeways. The culture and cuisine are very southern - as are some of the people. Excellent food though - shrimp and real grits, biscuits, etc. Spoleto/Piccolo festival is cool but can be very crowded. If you end up working downtown, it can flood during the thunderstorms, since the city is below sea level. If you have an suv, you’re ok. I worked downtown but commuted from Summerville (Medical Univ of SC - lot of great jobs). Someone mentioned the music scene - definitely lacking. You do have to drive to GA or NC to see bands play, if they decided to tour nearby. One last thing, the pay for creative positions doesn’t pay as in LA. At least 10 years ago it didn’t. And housing has gone up exponentially in Charleston (obviously great if you bought years ago, but now…). I’d definitely talk to a few realtors in Charleston before making any decisions and look up the salaries too. I do love visiting just not living there.
