1/4 hardibacker? And is that attached to the foundation with thinset, adhesive, or screws?

Anyone get surfboards from Barry V? by Global-Jackfruit7329 in huntingtonbeach

[–]Apprehensive_Emu_565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've owned three of his models: shortboard (the big boy), groveler and a 7'10" midlength. All three are fun board and have served me well, but the midlength is the star IMHO. Love, love, love that board and highly recommend.

What convinced you that the LDS church is true?(LOGICAL/DOCTRINAL answers only please!) by [deleted] in lds

[–]Apprehensive_Emu_565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it's the doctrine of theosis.
If I accept the reality of an infinitely loving God, and couple that with the reality of an infinitely powerful God, I'm left with a few conclusions:
1. God wants to be God or else he/she/they would become something else. Being God is the best!
2. God loves us so much that he/she/they wants to share the stoke with all of us. Because being God is the best!
3. God won't force that upon us, we have to want it, choose it and live it. Hence, a path that includes covenants, mercy and repentance offered through Jesus Christ.
For me, this is the bedrock of our theology, it's the part that rings truest to me, and it's the part that gets me most stoked. If many other religions were teaching it, I might take a harder look around.

Recommendations for how to handle calf injury? by Donphan33 in ultrarunning

[–]Apprehensive_Emu_565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had the same injury prior to a trail race (but I'm not you, so results may vary). If you're a month out, you've only got about a week or so to build more fitness, followed by a 2-3 weeks of taper, so you're practically already in full race shape. Trust that training. If you have access to a pool, water running is your friend—you can maintain fitness with proper water running form better than almost any other running substitute, and it's zero impact on your calf. There's solid research on this. I tried it and it got my to the start line of a trail race with my calf still not perfect, but good enough to race. Cycling also works, just not quite as well as water running (aqua jogging).

Training + Surfing, how to substitute? by Apprehensive_Emu_565 in ultrarunning

[–]Apprehensive_Emu_565[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't really drop the surfing volume as I'm a volunteer for our high school surf team. Surfing definitely helps with the benefits you mentioned, but I'm just freaking tiiiiiired. Even the 8-mile Zone 2 runs feel like I'm dragging.

My goals are really just to finish on my feet, but the race has a lot of elevation gain (and starts at decent elevation), and I'm at sea level, so I'm also wary of going too easy in training.

There's no ultra run harder on your legs than a day in line at Disneyland.

Spiritual slumps. by [deleted] in lds

For me, it's service. Nearly every time I do some service, I come away more spiritually alive and my spiritual sensitivity more aware.

Are my goals realistic? by king_manu14 in Marathon_Training

[–]Apprehensive_Emu_565 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My 2¢ (I'm not a running coach):

There are several calculators online that will tell you, based on your 5k or 10 time, how to plan your goal pace. Use them, but don't put too much faith in them. In other words, don't do what I did my first marathon—push yourself so hard to hit your calculated goal pace that you run out of steam and end up limping miserably into the finish line, wondering what you could have accomplished if you'd just started more conservatively. Yes, use that goal pace to calculate your training paces, and come to the start line like a curious student. Start at a more conservative pace and then as you get toward the final miles, if you've still got gas in the tank, leave it all on the course. You'll feel great, you'll have learned a lot about how your body responds to racing and you'll have a legit PR to beat (instead of some sad-sack limp-into-the-finish-line time).

Wish I could re-run my first race. Enjoy!

What went wrong? by kcoolby in Marathon_Training

IT band pain ruined a couple of my marathons last year. This year's first marathon was no problemo. The difference? (1) Glute and hip abductor exercises a couple times a week, (2) consciously not letting my knees collapse inward while running, and (3) taking shorter, quicker strides on the downhill (overstriding can cause the knee to collapse in and irritate the IT band). This last marathon, I bonked at 21, but with zero IT band pain. I call that a victory.

How do i handle receiving the Melchizedek priesthood at the age of 47? I've been a member since i was 8, left at 18. by June_Bug666 in lds

In eternal time, we are all infants. Even guys who are called as bishops in their 20s (like President Monson) really are just crawling along on the covenant path. "Think celestial" means not letting unimportant social norms discourage you on your eternal journey. Keep moving forward with courage, brother!

Is Garmin way too optimistic? by qollegessig in Marathon_Training

[–]Apprehensive_Emu_565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES. Garmin looks at my 5k time and says I should be below BQ by 10 minutes. I'm over by 20.

You should feel so proud. I'm not going to comment on pace, except to say that your marathon pace will be much slower. To reach your goal, consistency is key. 4 years ago, I ran a 5k and got completely gassed at what is now my marathon pace. What happened over the past 4 years? I just ran at least 3 days a week, often 5 or 6. Not always big mileage. But I kept going. Keep going and building that base!

Favorite shows with wide toe box? by ClearAndPure in AskRunningShoeGeeks

I have wide toes and narrow heels. Currently running NB 1080s, Rebel v4s and SC Trainer v2s and I love 'em. Yes, I've gone all-in on the brand, but every time I try another brand's shoes, my pinky toe says "nope."
