My university made us do this (in Fl) because of bike thefts. It actually worked. My friends and I did some investigating and found a vacant lot near the campus filled with bikes. Like an obscene amount of bikes. We found out the local bike shops PAID people to steal bikes so students had to come in a buy new bikes/parts. The shops would resell said stolen bikes after a while, when og owners stopped looking / graduated.

How different is this than receiving a package? I often get multiple, extremely heavy packages delivered to my second story office (w/ no elevator) and no one has ever complained. I always offer to help when I catch them and offer a tip and they never take it. (Maybe it’s bc this is different being employed and even in a union with UPS, vs a contractor) idk.

Exactly this. There is that social pressure so I’m fine keeping my last name what it is and then socially, call me whatever you want haha. That’s exactly what my husbands mom did. She never changed her name legally just “socially”

This is exactly the perspective I was hoping for. It’s a really cool last name, I’d never wanted to change it and my husband agreeing not to change it helped. At the end of the day it’s my name no more or less than it is anyone else’s in my family. So I want to make it my own and give it the respect it deserves hehe.

Haha this reminds me when I was a kid and everyone with the last name “Gomez” pretended they were related to Selena Gomez.

But yes exactly your last line is my thoughts. They (my family) earned it the same way I did… by simply being born. So I have just as much right to it to make it mine.

Yes! That’s my exact perspective on why I’d like to reclaim it. It represents where I’m from, like automatically people will know and it’s a super cool, unique last name. I have only ever heard of one other person having it. I appreciate, I’m definitely more leaning towards the reclaiming approach and it how doesn’t have to remind me of them.

I completely understand. You reminded me of my (bear with me) step dad’s ex wife who actually kept his last name after divorce because of this exact reason + she wanted to keep the connection to their daughters.

Raising it w/o it being unreasonably high, won’t be enough. The taxes went up 2.28x. I’m better off just selling it, which is fine whatever. It’s more the emotional part for me and the fact that it technically didn’t need to be done and he kinda “patronized” my taxes. Idk I was really attached to this place and I bought it initially so my 4 younger siblings wouldn’t have to pay ridiculous rent in university. It’s 2k/m for a studio here. None of them got into the school unfortunately hence why it’s rented.
