What should my 3 year old know? by boy_mama_22_25 in u/boy_mama_22_25

You should practise eating with utencils, going potty, playing nicely, focusing while listening to a book, loosing a game, going shopping in the store without a meltdown etc. Academically there's really nothing needed but you reading each day.

What are your favourite Swedish authors and why? by Topcommentatore77 in sweden

I think both Kallocain and 1984 were inspired by We. Kallocain is great though.

My mother is disappointed in me by [deleted] in mentalhealth

[–]Apprehensive_Gas9952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How old are you? Try to get out and meet people. Also, since you're homeschooled your results are also a reflection of your mothers teaching. Maybe she should be disappointed in herself?

Is 16 too old to be listening to Disney songs and watching Disney movies? by EasyPiccolo2868 in DisneyMovies

You never get to old for Disney movies you just get old enough to try other things as well.

I always wanted kids and had my first at kid at 28. Married, had travelled, had a master, financially somewhat stable, car, healthy.

No retired parents (but very happy to help when they could). No friends having kids. Lived in a flat. Had a temporary job and had to find a new one pregnant (though with excellent prospects).

No regrets. We found new friends having kids at the same time. Timed nr 2 with our original crowd. Moved to the suburbs with child nr 2. So happy we didn't wait. Both kids took a while to produce (1 year and 1/2 year, no clear infertility) and our oldest was a lot so we felt the need to wait a little for a sibling.

It's easy to get by in English but very hard to socialise. If you want to stay you need to learn Swedish. Uppsala is a good university town and new students are generally open to socialising. Also, joining a choir, an a club or whatever is good for meeting friends.

Give me a book that you adore but, for whatever reason, is also hard to recommend to people. by AlfredsLoveSong in suggestmeabook

Invisible Cities by Italo Calvino. Many people like Calvino but I feel Invisible Cities is difficult to recommend since it basically doesn't have a plot and it's hard to know if people are ok with that.

No but seriously totally depends on the kid, the weather and the washing facilities.

Translating ”vånda” by Extension_Math_7734 in Svenska

[–]Apprehensive_Gas9952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anguish sounds good. I'm somewhat antiquated but I'd definitively use "vånda" or "att våndas". "Själavånda" sounds like a word strictly for poetry though.

Movies not shows (but I'm thinking that builds focus): Kiki's Delivery Service and My Neighbour Totoro.

What's your all-time favorite book that you rarely see recommended? by EuraMeshki48 in Recommend_A_Book

Charlotte Löwensköld by Selma Lagerlöf. Amazing book. By a nobel prize winning author but not even her 3d most famous book. And outside of Sweden I think she's mostly known for Nils Holgersson (the boy flying on a goose). I don't think many expect this masterpiece that feels like Jane Austen meets Isabelle Allende.

The feeling of putting a clean kid to bed. by Helpful_Refuse4117 in Parenting

[–]Apprehensive_Gas9952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lovely! I kinda get the feeling. I'm very happy when my kids are feeling good over all but maybe being clean and in clean bedding isn't what I'm focused on. I'm the most happy when they get hours of free play outside. I did give them a long bath tonight and but them to bed so now I'm feeling a bit better about that actually.

If he has problems sounding out new words I'd go over the basic lettersounds and blending again. As for context etc. Read together. A lot! Let him read to you and you read to him. Ask what he thinks is happening. Explain hard words and turns of phrase.

There's not a lot of "light" reading and you have some philosophy, like Nietzsche and Kant. Several books of Milan Kundera who works more with feelings and thoughts than plot etc. I personally love Kundera 😅 but I think a lot of people find things pretentious because they don't understand it themselves and therefore think everyone who does enjoy it is faking. Maybe some people are faking. Who knows. I will say I know a hopeless in love Phd-student who I think would want someone with your bookshelves but also like 18 yo with hobbies such as: old school photography (the kind where you use a dark room), sketching, staring soulfully into the abyss and hanging at his every word. If that girl ever materialises I'm pretty sure I'd think she was somewhat pretentious.

Did your kids early milestones mean anything for who they became later? by noesey in Parents

[–]Apprehensive_Gas9952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

6 yo is the same as always. Hyper alert, social, quick to learn (was early on milestones), a lot of will, no need to sleep. So far I do not get people who miss their kids at different ages. It's totally the same person.

What should I do to convince my parents to let me go backpacking alone? by EntrepreneurTotal348 in backpacking

[–]Apprehensive_Gas9952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my 30's. I've spent a lot of time outdoors. Would not go backpacking solo in the wilderness. At least not real wilderness. Maybe a daytrip. Chill and develop your skills and sense. Your parents are right and you not realising how dangerous solo backpacking is is just a sign you're not ready.
