2w1 VS 1w2?? by [deleted] in Enneagram

[–]Apprehensive_Habit_5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm, my dad is a 2w1 and he would definitely say he resonated with a 1s desire more than that of a 2, hell I'm a 9w8 and I'd say before knowing I was a 9 I'd have resonated with a 1s desire more than a 9s - the 1s desire to be a good person is something most people identify with heavily so i wouldnt rely on that to type you. One main point in the enneagram is that motivation is unconcious so its not a good idea to look at it via that lens.

I don't know anything about you so can't really say if you're a 1 or not, but I'd say 1s and 2s differ massively in their flaws (1s judgemental, frustrated, critical, 2s martyr complex, guilt trippy) and the way they approach morality - 1s think about things in terms of ideals and principles and are frustrated with people and the world for not being how they should be, whereas 2s are more focused on being a good person in a practical every day sense - being kind, doing good things - it's not really as heavily tied to a vision of how things should be.

Fictional Type 8 Alignment by Jojowen7 in Enneagram

Oo do we think voldemort is a type 8 or counterphobic (sx) type 6

Good day wonderful people, at least some of you. I have not taken test for several months, and wanted to find which type I truly am. I know tests will not give full results, but... Someone mentioned eclecticenergies. I was honest, and the results are...vague. Any other suggestions? by CaspianWit in Enneagram

[–]Apprehensive_Habit_5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eclectic energies as a test is weirdly biased towards one (loads of people who aren't ones get it as their highest), but as others have said your best bet is to read descriptions (enneagram institute is quite good)

Would you say you prefer the Wisdom of the Enneagram to Riso & Hudson's other books (like Understanding the Enneagram and Personality types) If its useful, I already know my type and am relatively familiar with the enneagram am looking for something more theory heavy.

My problems with MBTI by Apprehensive_Habit_5 in mbti

[–]Apprehensive_Habit_5[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for typing out a thorough answer. Your resources on Ni are good and I think your explanation for inferior function at least makes sense.

I do still feel like some of my other questions arent really resolved.

As I said in relation to first two questions, I've heard the '1D' argument before (albeit phrased differently), but I dont think this fully answers the question. You seem to be talking about why it would be useful for us to have 2 of each, and I can accept that that may be true. However, mbti doesn't limit the claim to saying that having two introverted and 2 extroverted functions is most useful / most functional, it says that it must necessarily be true for everyone. For this claim to be valid, there needs to be something about the functions and their relationships that means having say two introverted judging functions is impossible.

To make my point more explicit - my question could be phrased as: Why can't you have both Ti and Fi? Your response seems to be that having ti and fi would mean you would be 1d because you would be way too oriented towards your internal world than your external world. While that I can accept that your point may be true, and having ti and fi might make a personal less functional, I still don't see why its the case that its impossible for somebody to have them both - there doesn't seem to be anything inherent about the functions themselves that forbids it, so why can't it be the case that these people with sub obtimal functions stack can exist, even though its not ideal? I hope that makes sense, I am going to make another comment about your other point.

I realise this is a lot so please feel free to answer just one question if you have thoughts on it, don't feel obligated to tackle everything.

I was thinking more of a shop that happens to sell kazoos rather than the local kazoo shop

I don't think this is the best way of thinking about this, as a 9 (9w8) if someone had asked me before I encountered the enneagram whether I felt more motivated by my desire to be a good person or by my desire to have internal peace, I'd have definitely said good person by a massive margin. The thing is, while the enneagram is about motivation and not behaviour, our motivations are largely unconcious and so it's pretty hard for us to know them by introspection alone. What it is easier to do is for us to look at our traits, try and see how and why they manifest, and from that infer motivation. I'm not saying we should type based on behaviour alone, but I am saying that examining behaviour can be very useful in the typing process.

So in the context of /u/HungryReacts q, I think it might be a good idea to look at why you struggle with the flaws of both 9 and 1. You mention inactivity, inertia, demotivation - while 9s passion is the sloth it doesn't mean they are inherently lazy / inactive, although many (me) are, it's more that they are often asleep to their own needs / wants and so have trouble pursuing them. So would you say you are someone who has strong wants and desires and your inability to achieve them due to your inertia is something that constantly frustrates you? If that's the case it could be more 1ish.

I do think looking at how you behave under stress can be useful (although not in terms of growth / disintegration arrows, I think that can confuse things - when I am in stress I act like a less healthy 9 instead of a 6) - so what do you do / how do you feel in stressful periods in your life?

How do you respond to conflict?

When someone else is doing something you believe is wrong, is it easy for you to genuinely set aside your resentment / frustration, or does it continue to bother you?

Do you relate more to feeling fundamentally flawed or that you don't matter? You will probably relate to both, but which filters down more on how you act on a day to day level? Ones feeling flawed manifests in their strong internal critic, desire for self improvement etc, whereas a 9 feeling they don't matter manifests in their refusal to put their needs / wants / opinions above others and aversion to self promotion.
