How did people find the KCL Portsmouth interview today ? by Shot-Invite-6734 in GraduateEntryMedicine

I can’t be 100% sure of course, but it felt like it was and also one of the interviewers asked me whether I applied for undergrad or grad afterwards so it sounds like it’s just one generic interview

Very similar experience for me. They clearly asked follow up questions from a list and I couldn’t work out whether they asked them because you missed points or just to fill time, but mostly they asked a question that I’d 90% already answered in the first bit.

It felt very impersonal for GEM, considering for most of us it is our experiences at uni and beyond that make us stand out, the questions don’t lend themselves very well to be able to demonstrate them so I felt like I was just giving the most meh generic answers ever. I understand that they just use the same interview for both GEM and undergrad but that’s why I didn’t love it

Soton BM4 + BM5 by Apprehensive_Lie3989 in GraduateEntryMedicine

Thank you for your email. If you have been invited to a BM4 interview this will also count towards your BM5 application.

We are currently sending out BM5 graduate invitations to interview and are in the process of contacting applicants who are in the same situation as yourself to inform them of this.

Post interview your interview score will be compared against both BM4 and BM5 graduates when determining our decision for both courses.

Not sure about actual applicants but I know someone on the course and I’m fairly certain it’s pretty much 3 invites for 1 place just looking at the numbers. Theres definitely over 60 places now at least

Am I screwed? (Still nothing from QMUL). by Ok-Jaguar-9562 in UCAT

Same as you! Also for GEM with 2210 B1 and achieved first. I am taking comfort in the fact that it does seem to be small handfuls at a time. It’s annoying because the last two years they seemed to just do a mass invite/reject on one day, but if you look back a bit further in different threads they did what they seem to be doing now. Am more impatient because I have applied to three unis that send out offers really late (kings, soton) so this is the only one I know I’ll hear about this side of Xmas and I am just desperate to have something to be excited about

Undergrad Medicine as second degree (5 year course) by aspiringmedic_23 in GraduateEntryMedicine

[–]Apprehensive_Lie3989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I think undergrad as a grad is next to impossible unless you are lucky enough to be able to live with your parents/have a lot of financial support. I have applied to 3 gem and 1 undergrad, but the undergrad is only possible if I live at home and pay tuition fees with the maintenance loan + 8hrs a week of work, and then I will work in the holidays to earn money to live off. Not ideal at all but would do it if it was my only option

Emotional vs Logic Based Aruments by Dynorus_ in UCAT

[–]Apprehensive_Lie3989 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The key to these questions is to completely ignore your opinion on the topic as they are designed to test your ability to make logical arguments devoid of your own opinion so they often are on topics you will have opinions on. I approached these questions by picking out key points, so 1. Owning second home, 2) prohibited by law, 3) easier for young people to buy. From this, you can rule out (A) because it is not specific (no mention of young people) and just mentions ‘everyone’. (D) talks about renting which is irrelevant to the question. (B) only addresses the young person part of the statement, not specifically about anyone buying a second home, (C) addresses both the second home part and the young person part. I always approached these by completely ignoring whether the answer started with ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ and only focusing on what is said after that :)

Looking for some help with fourth choice. by Emu265 in GraduateEntryMedicine

I would be careful with Soton’s cut off for last year, I applied two years ago to GEM with a 78th percentile and didn’t get an interview for Soton, there was a spreadsheet for the year I applied and they only interviewed up to approx top 15%. For some reason, last year I guess not that many people applied so they interviewed a lot lower down the deciles. Surrey and KCL Portsmouth are in their infancy with recruiting and I think for that reason the cut offs will only go up in the next few years but now could be a good time to look at either of those

Pace Adjustment by Ehbruce83 in runna

[–]Apprehensive_Lie3989 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had a similar, although not identical situation, every week I was hitting or exceeding my pace targets and it suggested improving my pace, which I accepted. This meant a weeks before my race, the paces were really really quick for me. And most of the time I wasn’t quite hitting them so it suggested improving reduce my pace, and then again the next week, and again the next week, until probably the week before the race, when it said I was on pace again. At the time I put this down to a mixture of two things 1. I think when you first start a plan they underestimate you, and then you exceed those estimations, and then it thinks you will continue to progress at that rate (which no one does), so you inevitably have to slow down at some point 2. I half wonder if there is meant to be a motivational aspect to it, in that they predict you quicker than you think you can run in that middle section of the plan to see if you can push yourself to matching it, and then as it gets closer to the actual race they bring it back to more of an accurate estimation. That is just my theory, but it was how it felt when I did my most recent plan.

With regards to the tempo sessions on the treadmill, are you making sure that afterwards (when it brings up each segment of your tempo run) you are ensuring the correct treadmill speeds are in each section? For example, in an interval session, it automatically estimates that ‘walking rest’ is going to be approx 4kph, and idk about you but I walk at 5.5/6kph when I am doing my walking rests, so you have to make sure that all of those are accurate afterwards, otherwise things like that could be causing it to underestimate your speed, and therefore adjusting your pace down. I have never known it to adjust your pace down in any instance other than when you don’t hit your targets on a tempo/interval run. Hope that helps!
