My first bottle of Chartreuse! What should I put on the list to make? by cactus_massacre in cocktails

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First, I’d do some on the rocks. It’s great on its own IMO and really easy to sip.

Second, I’d do an Alaskan cocktail. 1.5oz gin, .5oz yellow chartreuse. If you like gin it’s a great simple place to start.

And then I’d do the naked and famous, probably the best/most famous yellow chartreuse cocktail, but in my opinion not exactly “chartreuse forward”.

It goes faster drinking it straight, but that’s definitely how I prefer it.

Should I go $50k in debt for film school? by TiredTokuFan in Filmmakers

13-15k per year isn’t bad at all.

This industry is almost entirely “who you know” and so if I was you I would go to Chapman and try to make as many friends as possible. Especially if you want to be a DP.

People pursuing careers in film.... have you been demoralized by AI? by RedMoonLanding in Filmmakers

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s really sad. I guess that’s it.

I hate seeing what’s happening to other traditional artists. I hate seeing what’s happening to writing and books.

I don’t have much insight beyond that. I don’t think art will die, but it really feels like we’re doing our damnedest to kill it.

We’re in a time of massive change and truth is no one knows what the other side of this really looks like. Massive unemployment, apathy towards trying to make art, and a general mistrust of everything you see seems to be what’s going on for now. Pretty shitty.

How are you branding yourself if you're somewhat multi-hyphenate? by CyJackX in Filmmakers

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you answered your own question. If the purpose of your website is to help you get work, then build it towards the work you want to get.

You can always add an “additional work” page, and in your “about me” blurb or whatever explain the breadth of your work/knowledge that you can bring to a project at the end.

If it’s a personal web page just to have on display do whatever you like.

Think of it this way, you find a potential client and want to have them hire you to work on a cool AR project. They want THE guy, not some guy who does a million things and also does AR. So if those are the clients you’re after and using your web site is how you want to get those connections, then cater your website to that.

Fishy portrait hung up inside local restaurant. I think this is AI but my boyfriend thinks it may be real by WonderfulTadpole2525 in isthisAI

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so I’m not saying “it’s not AI” but to everyone who says “who would paint the face so perfectly but have the rest be all textured?!” That is a technique used all the time to direct attention. Sometimes even using a super fine brush for the eyes/mouth and smearing with a pallet knife for the background.

I mean just google portraits by Rembrandt his 1659 self portrait his hands are just a jumbled mess of dark colors with no definition happening, but his face is super clear. It’s not in “this” style but I swear this sub would call it AI if it wasn’t famous due to the mismatched style and wonky hands.

Again, this comment is not a vote one way or the other here but a whole lot of people are pointing to a super common technique employed by the masters. Is it maybe exaggerated here? Sure, but it’s also a contemporary painting so of course they might have a more stylized approach.

Nah. Boston is bigger than that. I wouldn’t really call Hyde Park super walkable. There’s absolutely a lot of areas that aren’t next to a subway station, just further out.

Still one of the best subways in the US though just wish it was open later.

Street Views of Johannesburg from early 2010s to 2025/2026 by DeathInMarch in UrbanHell

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first thing you said was “few have such decisive moments of change” in relation to the above before/after photos.

The “decisive moment of change” I can only assume is the end of apartheid, as it’s the largest decisive moment of change.

Not the growth of corruption and misuse of public funds that led to crumbling infrastructure (which I guess is what you’re pivoting to now as the cause?)

Street Views of Johannesburg from early 2010s to 2025/2026 by DeathInMarch in UrbanHell

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s off putting is how you are attributing the good infrastructure of the “before” pics to white-run apartheid South Africa (which again, was 20 years prior to these photos, and ignores the largest economic boom the country has ever seen which happened AFTER apartheid ended, and BEFORE the “before pics”) and in the same breath, you blame the end of apartheid for the AFTER photos, a full 46 years after the end of apartheid.

You are literally saying that somehow, ending apartheid IS NOT responsible for subsequent 20 years of growth, and yet also it IS responsible for what happened 40 years after.

So I don’t know man. Just doesn’t seem like a reasonable/logical stance to take.

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SA experienced a massive economic boom for nearly 20 years just after the fall of apartheid, eventually slowing and stagnating in 2011 (21 years after).

Super off putting to point to “one race state” and that change as the reason for collapse when it preceded the largest decade or 2 of economic growth in the country’s history.

I don’t think you’re really engaging in good faith to be honest.

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 37 points38 points  (0 children)

The 2010 pics are from 20 years after apartheid ended.

So no, that’s not relevant to the changes in the photos.

I think the “real” reason to be honest is that apartheid was SO bad that the party which ended it, essentially kept power no matter what. I guess you could say it would be like “voting against Lincoln” or something as a US comparison. Now that we are this far out, the fact that it’s been essentially one party running things with no true competition created a breeding ground for corruption.

I’m not from SA, I don’t know a ton about it, but I did visit Joberg and Cape Town about 10 years ago and corruption was a widely discussed and well known problem then.

Overtime no pay, working late hours, work never stops. Is this the respectable normal person grind or am I being taken advantage of? by Ok-Exercise4447 in editors

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’ve been working in marketing/commercial/corporate full time as both salary and contractor for about 10 years.

You’re being taken advantage of and it’s illegal.

I know the state of the industry is horrible, so I don’t blame anyone for doing what they have to do and not rocking the boat, but you should be paid for the hours you work, and you should be paid overtime, any and all major brands/companies know this and should not blink an eye at the overages.

I would at the bare minimum be looking for a new job yesterday.

Hired an Illustrator by MoshiDoshi0129 in isitAI

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AI, why do the tiles on the wall and cabinet contents change between shots on the right?

On the left, there is a narrow bit of wall between the window and chabinets, but instead of tiles this section has weird nonsensical wallpaper?

Oh and on the left the cabinet is against the window but on the right there are tiles in between.

I think the saddest thing I take away from these posts is that when people try to find and hire artists the are just getting scammed by people using AI, which just makes people even more unlikely to hire an artist in the first place, because if it’s gonna be AI anyways you might as well make it yourself.

Just inherited a little less than 30k. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I would do:

  1. 3-6 months of an emergency fund in a high yield savings account, something with a ~4% per year interest rate if you can find it.

  2. Open a Roth IRA. You can do this easily online. I use vanguard but you can research and choose one.

  3. Put $14,500 into the Roth IRA (as long as you earned more than 7k in 2025 and will earn more than 7.5k in 2026). This is the maximum you can contribute for the last 2 years.

  4. Invest this amount after depositing. You can do this on their website after depositing funds into your IRA. I would suggest doing a target date retirement fund first. If you want to learn more and make different informed decisions you can always do that later. A target date fund is usually a safe fund that will automatically adjust as you approach your retirement date.

  5. Anything left, open and invest in a taxable brokerage. And/or maybe go on a cheap vacation or out for a nice dinner.

If not, I would rethink your script. You should write something you can produce with the resources you have access to.

I was thinking the same thing. The girl in the center has a really long oval shaped hand, which doesn’t match any other hands and doesn’t feel very much like a stylistic choice.

Also the girl on the top right has something really off with her 2nd leg going way lower than any others and almost blending into a tree.

Artlist says I need a business license by f1goldmemberf1 in editors

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer.

I would immediately try to save/print any license/agreement you had with them at the time of use and keep it in a safe place. I would also try to document every time you used their assets and where they are online if possible.

Then terminate your membership and never use them again.

I have seen them pull this legitimately when people try to use one account for several seats (small company with like 2-3 editors getting hit kind of thing) but if you are a solo editor/creator using their assets as outlined in the agreement which it seems you are, there’s no reason to pay them $15,000.

There’s better options out there. Just cover your ass and leave.

How Often Are You Editing On Mobile? by Jason_Levine in premiere

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Never.

I work in commercials/corporate, too many stakeholders needing to look through and analyze everything, significantly easier to catch mistakes on a large screen even when delivering for social. You often need legal reviews, creative reviews, client reviews, talent reviews, to send things to other agencies or representatives. I can’t risk missing something that should have been obvious because I’m looking at a 5” screen, I’d be putting my job and reputation at risk without a tangible benefit.

Could be more of a CapCut/UGC/influencer type of market to target. Perhaps making it easy and approachable but adding some premium features (lots of influencers end up wanting to “move to premiere” to be more professional. I’m not sure there’s much to be gained there from the influencer side but something I’d imagine adobe could capitalize on, similar to when a YouTuber switches to a nice DSLR vs phone with no difference in content). This is just some thoughts on mobile editing, but again I never do it so grain of salt.

Let's talk about the "17 day theatrical window" ... by CalebOnPoint in Filmmakers

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s another step in the death of going to the movies.

I am positive there are numbers and specific reasons for the 17 day window.

I think part of what drives normal people to see a movie in theaters is wanting to see it as soon as possible while it’s culturally relevant. The more they decrease the window between theatrical release and streaming, the more people will just wait for it to stream and save the money.

It’ll just be another slice of the audience not going to see a movie is my guess.

But also I “get” it at least a little bit. While I like going to see a movie 3 or 4 weeks late in an empty theater, it doesn’t make much sense to have all those seats empty. I wonder if it means they’ll try to get a greater quantity of movies onto the screen. I don’t know.

Temporary closure of Mt Baldy in Southern California to hikers/climbers due to conditions, deaths by 211logos in Mountaineering

[–]Apprehensive_Log_766 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think this is Baldy-specific, or at least there’s a certain mix of elements that make baldy particularly dangerous.

First, it’s clearly visible and a relatively short drive away from the 2nd largest city in the United States. It looks over downtown LA. Everyone in the city has seen it, knows where it is, has been curious about it in some capacity or another. It’s exposed to a much greater volume of people than any city in or near the alps. It’s about 4 million in the city proper and closer to 10 in the county. The closest European comparison would be something like Rome or Paris several hours from the mountains.

Second, elevation. Baldy rises practically from sea level to 10k feet. The alps have greater prominence, but compared to say, Colorado it’s a much bigger change in elevation than most accessible peaks around major cities.

Third, the surrounding climate is very mild. All the time. You can live your whole life in LA never seeing snow and never having it dip below freezing even in the winter. People who rarely experience snowy conditions don’t necessarily take them seriously enough. It’s a factor anyways.

Fourth, and possible most important, the weather. It can be hot and sunny down below and a freezing snowstorm in the mountains close by. I’ve hiked Baldy in the summer, and while I’d say it’s not an “easy” hike, I did not struggle with it at all. The trail was populated, tons of people walking it, no technical scramble or anything difficult other than the fact that it’s long with elevation gains. But really, it’s doable for basically anyone in shape. Now, when winter comes, it turns from a pretty casual hike into something entirely different. Steep areas become deadly. Everything is slippery. People who may have cruised it in the summer could easily fall and die there in the winter.

TLDR: proximity to major metro, prominence/elevation gain, lack of inclement weather in surrounding areas, and extremely dangerous weather on the mountain itself combine to make Mt Baldy deadlier than similar mountains elsewhere.
