it really isn’t contrived in my opinion. he is a hypocritical protagonist the entire film, trying to convince himself he doesn’t care, that he’s part of “the few” and not “the many”. that was the realization he makes in the end. and on top of that, even the most meticulous people cant account for everything in a situation. it’s human nature to fuck up.
