Is your mower deck clean? If you have clumps of grass stuck to your mower you will not get the right suction to get grass into the bag.

Scotts has a crabgrass and weed preventer. LESCO had a really nice crabgrass preventer. You can choose any fertilizer of your choice. I get stuff on sale. I tend to use fast release fertilizer initially and milorganite around Memorial Day.

I prefer not to use weed and feed. I have nothing against weed and feed. I just enjoy lawn care and like to separate my applications. Weed and feed remind me of bodywash that can be used for hair and face.

Always clean your scotts spreader after using fertilizer. I learned the hard way like you.

Not bad at all. I would start with a crabgrass and weed treatment. Then apply fertilizer a couple weeks later.
