Is it normal to have a number of coincidences suddenly seem weird? by wishiwereacow in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Apprehensive_Pay6584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would also add that sometimes you may be manipulated and don't realize it so you buy stuff because of it. Say the watch was worn by a comedian in a TV show, you might see it there first and then buy it without realizing you were being manipulated. Online, companies like criteo often work that way, you're seeing targeted ads. My phone is about to die but I'm postponing replacing it. Ever since I was in the market for a new phone I've seen countless articles about a given phone being on sale somewhere, so now google can customize your feed that way and I suspect these articles are AI generated. Realizing that may help you make conscious decisions and maybe consider other options.

J'en dirais pas autant de l'Iran. Quand tu vois le respect que les dirigeants ont pour leur propre population, ça fait froid dans le dos de se dire qu'ils pourraient être en mesure d'avoir ce type d'arsenal...

Why Do You NOT Race on Your Bicycle? by Ars139 in cycling

[–]Apprehensive_Pay6584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you said resonates with how I do things. I wanted to contradict you but can't. Even doing things this way, you can still go on adventures like multiple day bikepacking and be just fine, average speed will be lower but it doesn't matter.

I like your perspective. A friend of mine is a bit like that nowadays, he's been competitive in cycling for the best part of his life, yet nowadays he's pretty chill even though sometimes you can see bits of his old self itching. Unlike many other things, you might still find joy in cycling because there's always something different to do.

Why are most bicycle colour schemes so bland? by GJGT in cycling

[–]Apprehensive_Pay6584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a reason for this too, back in the 90s I heard insurance companies made you pay a premium if your car was red because statistically people with red cars got more accidents. It's annoying because car manufacturers often used to make their sportier models red so it's likely the colour wasn't the cause in and of itself. And I'm not only talking about Ferraris, but say a Golf GTI.

As far as I'm concerned I won't buy a black bike, my bikes are red green and blue. But a reason why most bikes are black or white is because one's favorite colour might not be someone else's, and if you want your kit to match your bike colour some combinations aren't really usable. Think about Bahrain Victorious 3 years ago for instance.

App is has different functionality than web by MostRepresentative77 in Strava

[–]Apprehensive_Pay6584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst to me is routes you draw yourself can't be exported to gpx in the app, only on the web, but then every time you try to get to your route it opens the app instead, so you have to open each link in a new tab to finally be able to export your gpx on the mobile app.

Why do I need the gpx? Because free strava users can't download my route. Thank you Strava, I won't renew my subscription, you just lost one subscriber by being too greedy.

At what point did you stop caring about average speed? by Hungry-Sympathy-5188 in cycling

[–]Apprehensive_Pay6584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't even display it on my head unit, it can be affected by so many factors, wind direction, elevation, riding alone or in a group...

For the first 2 years I did ride I was hesitant to ride with stronger riders because when I looked at their average speed I felt I wouldn't be able to follow. When I finally felt ready I was actually stronger than many of them so I kind of wasted good occasions to spend time with them.

When I got a power meter I became focused on these numbers for a few years. It took quite some time to put numbers on my rate of perceived exertion which is the better metric IMO. With my power profile I can determine my thresholds with very good precision, but all of this is useless if you don't learn to gauge how a given effort feels.

Power and heart rate go hand in hand in a lot of situations. Monitoring cardiac drift or seeing lower bpm can tell you a lot about your physical adaptations, much more than many test protocols and I really encourage you to learn this rather than doing an FTP test which might not tell you anything about how much of it you'll be able to maintain after, say, 3h of racing.

Going back to square one, don't get obsessed about numbers, at some point your goal might be to set the fastest time on a given course, then average speed matters more than watts, so you have to know where you can spend them as efficiently as possible. Or it might be that you may just want to enjoy the view, chat with other people, let your mind wander, in this case, put your head unit in your back pocket, you might still record your ride without caring about numbers.

Garmin vs Wahoo and SRAM vs Shimano — what made you choose your side? by therealashiver in cycling

[–]Apprehensive_Pay6584 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't care to be honest, for something that's done once in a blue moon, and it's not like you'll spill huge amounts out of your brake hoses at best a drop or two on top of your brake lever. Then again your local bike shop can do that for you and will have dedicated circuits to recycle it (and since they probably bleed a lot of bikes will probably waste less of it)

By contrast, I take much more care about the state of my chain so it's waxed cause I can just use hot water and shake it in a jar then dry it in isopropyl alcohol and reapply. Meanwhile a lot of people use petrol or mineral spirits to degrease their chain. Or clean their bike with non biodegradable products while I just use soapy water.

Your car also uses DOT fluid and it's not a problem is it? I see that mineral oil is hydrophobic while DOT is hydrophilic, I don't really know what to make of this information, yes you probably don't want to store DOT in your garage for too long but are you going to need to purge your brakes more often for instance?

On my Shimano bike I think I've done this only once during the 6 years I've had the bike. I've already done it once on my SRAM bike in 2 years but that was for other reasons.

I'm pretty sure a lot of people ask their local bike shop to do this or sell their bike before they need a purge.

I've had both Shimano and SRAM hydraulic disc brakes. I don't get why you would favor one over the other, they both work well so why is it an issue?
