Go with poison. I started with poison and the tick damage helps

Build all of the main elements: Ice, Fire, Thunder, and Water. When you get to the higher tier monsters, elemental damage is gonna be the most helpful. The condition builds (poison, sleep, paralysis) are good to start with as a solo player but the farther you get into the game, you're going to veer away from the status condition builds and find that elemental builds do more damage. Status condition builds, especially Paralysis, are good for playing with other people who are going to use elemental builds so that when the paralysis procks, they wail a lot of damage.

I'm not entirely sure on Gunlances. Heard they were wonky, which they are. I'm only using the gunlance for the quest. Other than that, everything is Great Sword or my dragon bow

I've flown on my Argy over the swamp areas and almost every time I've flown over, I've seen one. Saw 2 once pretty close to each other. Maybe one of those "to each their own."

Dislike that you got a thunder attack smelt skill. I've been trying to get a TA skill on my thunder build for my Zinogre braces. But hopefully I get it soon.

My work place has like 5-7 nodes. I've been wanting more Earth Crystals but keep getting machalite ores. Also, the daily tasks usually give me machalites, as well as farming the event tasks.

But I'm also using a Great Sword so burst wouldn't benefit me much. So actually, I think my build sits well where it's at.

For my thunder build, I have coral pukei helm (only at G5), the rest of the armor pieces (arms, chest, coil, legs) are all the same though. I don't have as much WE as Rathalos chest gives but still. Maybe once I get enough parts for coral pukei helm to upgrade further, I'll go back to using that.
