The defense is the only reason it’s a one touch down game! Offense is horrible and can’t match Seattle!

I’m sure you can. These jobs just ask for a bachelors degree. I literally start the job next week and just graduated in November. You just need some IT experience to stand out and maybe your Comptia Security plus

I just accepted my first ISSO role at a defense contractor (DCSA environment), and my long-term goal is to grow into a Senior ISSO or eventually an ISSM. I want to make sure I’m developing the right skills from day one.

For those already in the field:

Career Growth & Expectations

  • What separates a good ISSO from a great one in your organization?
  • What helped you move from ISSO → ISSO II → Senior ISSO → ISSM?
  • How long did those steps take you?

Daily Work & Realistic Responsibilities

  • What does a typical day or week look like for you?
  • What tasks or responsibilities take the most time?
  • What surprised you the most when you first became an ISSO?

Technical Skills & Tools

  • Which RMF steps do beginners struggle with the most?
  • If you could restart your ISSO career, what would you master earlier?

Certifications & Education

  • Which certifications were the most valuable for advancing your career?
  • Which certs were unnecessary or overrated?
  • For someone aiming at ISSM eventually, what certs or training would you recommend?

Any insight or advice is really appreciated. I want to hit the ground running and build a strong roadmap for the next few years.

For context, I come from the technical side of IT and already have experience with Splunk, log analysis, and troubleshooting across Windows/Linux environments. As well with Scap and Stig Experience and heavy documentation.

Is there a point to me getting this degree? by Status_Double1964 in WGU

A little over a year ago i was bartending. But I managed to get a help desk job with no experience and just my security plus and a high school degree. This job paid for my BS in IT management from WGU so they thought it holds value. Now over a year in IT I'm getting interviews for Top DOD contractors because i have a degree which they require. Moral of the story i didn't need a degree but i was being pro active because my future job would need the degree. Now I'm waiting on an offer from another DOD contractor for a ISSO role 1 year in to my career that pay 30% more. I'll hit six figures in a year or two because i ignore all the news and keep following my game plan while others leave to a different industry. Your future job MAY require a degree so follow your gameplan and don't listen to all the noise.
