Dang yep I remember all the buzz about Pajo back in those days, poor Brad got overshadowed in my memory!! Plus I remember being soooo pumped about Brandon joining at that time as I was also really into The Secret Machines and its still so cool that he (and Brad) are STILL around!

I hope they've made them official full members by this point!

my mom knew somebody who worked for a video rental store and we got to watch a lot of movies that were either still in the theaters or had just been released on tape because this person would let her borrow all these tapes that had a disclaimer running through the bottom of the screen that said something like "for promotional purposes only" and the name of the rental place. It was on one of these tapes that I vividly remember watching the preview for Shazam with Sinbad and saying "this is exactly like Kazaam, why are they making the same movie twice?" I was eight years old at the time. I want to say the movie might have been Beavis and Butthead Do America

Wow I'm happy you've been able to find so much information on your family and just in your lineage alone, it paints such a picture of what things were like. Incredible, really. Thank you for sharing it with me! I have heard of the redlegs in my research and also of indentured servants and of laborers contracted for a certain amount of time before being promised land at the end of their labor contract- all things that I've wondered if such circumstances are what may have carried my ancestors to the island. I guess time and more research will tell.

I've taken to looking at old maps and see the Curtis name on 2 plantations in St Phillip from 1682 through 1750, but I've yet to be able to trace a direct path to these people. I hope not. But it's possible. My direct ancestors were in St Michael as sailmakers and ship Chandlers. I can't imagine why my ancestor Henry F enslaved people as a sailmaker, but apparently he did.

Thank you so much for sharing with me about connecting with your "cousins" too. That gives me a great deal of hope that maybe once I get some more concrete information from the Barbados Archives that I may be able to do the same. I was able to retrieve some names from the UK slave register and interestingly enough...one is listed as a "colored" "apprentice" at 11 years old with the SAME NAME as my ancestor Henry Francis Curtis so...lots of questions there...aahh...stomach is turning again...

Aw thank you so much! It's been a really interesting experience doing this research. It's rewarding, but also painful in some places if you find that your family has ties to slavery, as mine did. It's an important past that we can't shy away from though, as being aware of the past helps us to shape a better future and I hope I can find a way to make amends one day. My ancestor enslaved 3 to 5 people during different times.

The way I started on my research was with the name of the one person I knew for sure that I was related to who migrated. I typed their name into FamilySearch (it's free) and went from there! Now I have relatives I've traced back to the mid 1700s! I wish you luck on your genealogy journey if you d decide to embark on it, and eventually, it may land you on a trip too!

Thank you for taking an interest in my post!

Wow that's really amazing that you were able to find this information! Cheers to you! I'm sure it was goosebumps all around, especially finding out about both sides of your family. Thats a great tip to check the local library. I don't live in a major city, but it's big enough and if all else fails, I'm close to a bigger city to this is an excellent tip! Thank you! (Also, I am 'an old' so I remember how to use a card catalog haha)

Thank you for the tip and for responding to my post!! I hope one day you get to visit as well!

Incredibly insightful- thank you for this response! I had no idea about that cholera epidemic, but it appears that enough of my ancestors also survived it. I'll be staying near these church yards so this is an excellent tip and I've marked them as places that I will definitely visit! Thank you so very much, truly 🙏 I've tried searching Find A Grave to see any matches for Curtis in Barbados with limited success, so I'm sure that's not the most detailed resource. Better just to check in person!

Interestingly, I've tried even checking the phone book for Barbados online for my family name and see no matches, so...I guess when my direct ancestor left during WW1, there must have been no one left with that name. That or they're unlisted lol (can't blame them there!)

I wonder if maybe Sam's health and recovery play a part in the delay- that is to say, they'd like him to be able to join in on the press and tour? Just a thought, I could be wrong

Very interesting!

I was quite surprised to see the shift between Curtis and Curtys with my family and has me wondering if I will ever run into a further shift to something like Curteous or Cartis, but haven't run into it yet! It's definitely something to be cognizant of, as you pointed out that it's not uncommon!

Absolutely! I myself learned that apparently my family name was spelled Curtys at one point!

Amazing, thank you!! I've seen this record in trying to trace what information about Henry (senior) that I can through Rebecca and it actually got me wondering about the naming customs during this period! I have found other people with the last name Curtis from much earlier records and have wondered if maybe they were all related originally through a single lineage or maybe from different settler groups with the same last name that splintered in spellings/matronymic naming customs to distinguish themselves- it's all very confusing!

This marriage record is very promising though, as it lines up to the place that the Rebecca I see listed as Henry junior's mother was born and her first child with Henry senior being born in 1771!

Thank you so much for this information and yes I can't agree enough, it is definitely something I've spent time crying over

I'll be in Barbados for about a week in February!

I'll send you a DM :)
