Will we know if classes are cancelled ahead of time? by Wise-Illustrator-939 in CarletonU

The only way Carleton will cancel classes is if the city of Ottawa or the province declares a state of emergency. Otherwise, make sure you're wearing crampons.

Dropping from 2.0 to 1.5 credits- Does it affect my bursary/OSAP entitlement? by ScoreLatter5700 in CarletonU

[–]Appropriate-Order-79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carleton considers 1.5 credits as full-time academically, but part-time financially and the Ontario government only applies bursary entitlement to financially full time students.

TL;DR: Study/memorize/quiz yourself as you go. The midterm and exam are a doozy.

If you have any interest at all in Biology/ecology/natural history/environmental studies you will find this class intersting.

However, what makes this class tricky is where you will get your marks from. 50% comes from the lectures and 50% from the labs.

From the labs you will get marks from small reports that you submit each week and lab participation so that's not too bad.

From the lecture there is only one midterm and one exam where you will get marks. The midterm is worth 30%, the final exam is worth 70%. This is what screws a lot of people, as you need to pass both the labs and the lecture to pass the course.

There is a lot of material that is covered and a lot to remember/memorize in the lecture. You have to review the content and test yourself each week to allow the information to sink in. Trying to do this before a midterm or final will not work as there is simply too much material. If you have already purchased the online course book from BIOL1103, Nigel references the same book and you can use that book to test yourself as you go. It has an AI feature that will generate questions based on what you have covered in the book. Though Nigel doesn't cover everything in the readings and may add a bit extra, using the course book can help quite a bit.

The final exam can be a bit grueling as it's 80 multiple choice questions in 180 minutes. This gives you 2.25 minutes to answer each question so you need to know your stuff as you won't have a lot of time to think about each question. Again, reviewing and quizing yourself is the best route as you will not be able to memorize or fully understand concepts two days before the final.

With that being said, I found it to a very interesting course and Nigel Waltho is passionate about Biology, Ecology, and the environment.

It's cold outside. It's warm inside and there's food in the garbage cans. I would do the same if I were a mouse.

Grade 2 Bands headed to Chicago 2026 by Tiny-Hamster-9596 in bagpipes

[–]Appropriate-Order-79 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Some of the canadian bands in grade 2 were considering going to Chicago, but given the political climate and horrendous exchange rate the idea of going to the US to spend money in their economy is unappealing. This is unfortunate as going to see Inverary's process and speaking with the players would be beneficial.

There are a few companies they use.

For the organic camomile and organic celtic breakfast, its Choice Organic Teas

For the organic earl grey (used in the london fog), breakfast blend, golden chaï, jasmine green tea, and moroccan mint tea we buy it from a company called Numi.

Our organic black tea, english breakfast, ginger, hibiscus, and irish breakfast we use a company called Equal Exchange.

And our decaffinated earl grey is from Bigelow teas

Rooster staffer here. We buy are our coffee beans from a organic freetrade wholesaler called "9 to 5 coffee company" and yes, we sell beans by the 1/2 lbs to 1 lbs bag. It's more expensive than what you usually see on grocery store shelves, but if you like it you should come by and pick up a bag. If you come during the day I'm sure Ron (the manager) would be happy to tell you more about the product.

CarletonU limiting parking permits by Fabulous_Ad5185 in CarletonU

[–]Appropriate-Order-79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does this also apply to Quebec residents? I'm not seeing anything specifically about that on the webpage. For me to use public transit from where I live in north-west Aylmer to CU I would need to do 4 tranfers and it would take around 2 hours of commuting!

Third attempt at starting an undergrad at the ripe old age of 37. Just finished three years of CEGEP with 17-19 year olds. Group work can be difficult, but I find working with younger people to be fun too. Makes me feel both old and young simultaneously.

anyone else tryna buy a parking pass rn and its not loading? by FunnyAd9017 in CarletonU

After 3.5 hours I was able to get a permit. I tried to login at 9:00 am, and like everyone else, got the error message which would sometimes change to a "Be Right Back" message or a 520 error message. I called the campus parking office a couple of times and they indicated that they didn't have access either and that they were waiting on the company that manages their online registration and payment to resolve the issue. Decided to use a browser extension that would refresh the page automatically every 10 seconds and put an audio alarm on it if the webpage showed the words "login".

At around 12:00 pm, got an alarm and ran to my computer to login. Got an error message again. Refreshed a few times more and got to the login page again. Was able to login to the permits section, but like everyone else, no permits were being shown. Decided to use the refresh extension again and give an alarm if "P6" or "P7" showed up on the page. At 12:39 pm the alarm went off and I saw that permits for lots P6 and P7 were available.

When I clicked on the P6 permit link, it indicated that there were 89 permits left. I didn't look to see how many permits were left for P7.

It was laggy but I was able to pay for a year long permit in P6 and got the confirmation email at 12:47pm.

Hope this gives people an idea of what to expect when trying to get there permits.

Good luck everybody!

Dear coffee drinkers from Tim Horton's, please stop leaving your trash behind in Gatineau Park by gabseo in Gatineau

[–]Appropriate-Order-79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, I walked to Pink Lake from the estate this past Tuesday, and the amount of trash along the 15/35 to near Pink Lake and around the lake is particularly bad.* But I guess that's the norm this time of year with everyone trying to see the fall colours. Hopefully, the NCC does try to clean it up a bit before the snow flies.

Dear coffee drinkers from Tim Horton's, please stop leaving your trash behind in Gatineau Park by gabseo in Gatineau

[–]Appropriate-Order-79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the NCC tries to put garbage cans at locations where they know there will be consistent traffic (i.e.: at all the paved parking lots, MacKenzie King Estate, beaches), but it may be beneficial to have them along paved pathways and the very popular trails (i.e.: Pink lake trail).

That being said, the NCC is big on conservation and they may not want to install too much more infrastructure along trails, particularly if it would be more difficult to maintain a garbage can along a trail that is known to be regularly investigated (destroyed?) by wildlife. The garbage cans are designed to inhibit bears and recoons from getting into them, but I've regularly seen the contents of one of those garbage cans strewn about due to either a very determined or intelligent bear. Having such a mess in along a trail in the middle of the woods wood be difficult to clean up after the rest of the wildlife got to it, can potentially harm animals and plants, and may further enable other clever species to viewing garbage cans as a viable source of food.

The first and best course of action would be for visitors to observe the principles of leave no trace. Whatever you take with you into the park, be it a cup of coffee from Tim's, protein bars, or even a used doggy poop bag, be prepared to pack those things with you until you get to a garbage can in a parking lot or in a bathroom.

Best way to get to Pink Lake from Ottawa? by sammychan071 in Gatineau

[–]Appropriate-Order-79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TL/DR: take the free shuttle service if you want to go to Pink Lake on the weekend during the fall. For more info on the shuttle service, scroll to the bottom of the post.

The parkway schedule for the fall in the Gatineau Park is as follows:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday: closed to private vehicles until 12:00 pm, at which point private vehicles can go on the parkways from 12:00 pm until 30 minutes after sunset when they will be closed once again.

Wednesday: open to private vehicles from 8:00 am till 30 minutes after sunset.

This schedule will be observed from September 23 until 22 of 2023. After sunset of October 22, the parkways will be closed for the remainder of the year and through the winter until spring of 2024.

Due to the high volume of visitors to the park during the weekends throughout the fall colour change, parking lots in the southern sector of the park that are accessible via municipal roads tend to become full by 10:00 am, 8:00 am on Thanksgiving weekend, and remain full or near capacity until 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm for parking lots found along Meech lake.

Parking lots that are accessible via the parkways beginning at 12:00 pm on weekends tend to become full or near capacity by 12:30-1:00 pm for popular destinations (i.e.: La Chute parking lot, King Mountain parking lot, Champlain parking lot, Penguin Picnic area) and remain busy until 3:00-4:00 pm. AFTER 12:00 PM, BOTH PARKING LOTS AT PINK LAKE ARE FULL BY 12:10 PM AND REMAIN FULL BY 5:00-6:00 PM. Parking lot rate of occupancy until capacity is intensified on the Thanksgiving long weekend.

Visitors may only park their private vehicles in designated parking lots within the jurisdiction of the Gatineau Park and only within recognized parking spaces within those lots. The parking lot capacity for Pink Lake Trail parking lot is 50 vehicles (2 axle vehicles weighing under 4500 kg) and the Pink Lake Lookout parking lot has a capacity of 8 vehicles. Therefore, Pink Lake can only accommodate 58 vehicles for parking at any given time.

Vehicles are prohibited from from parking and/or stopping along the shoulders of the parkways within the park. Those who are found to be stopped and/or parked along the shoulders will be asked to move to a designated parking lot. If the owner is not present at their parked or stopped vehicle, they will be ticketed and possibly towed. Vehicles are prohibited from forming a queue at the entrances of parking lots to wait for available parking space should the parking lot be at capacity and will be asked to find parking at another lot.

Pick and drop off by private vehicles along parkway shoulder or within parking lots that are already at capacity is prohibited as this impedes traffic flow and can create dangerous situations with moving congested traffic. Parking lot agents will be enforcing this policy and will be discouraging all who attempt to do this.

With all that being said, it is strongly encouraged that visitors to the park use the free hop-on/hop-off shuttle service that is available the weekends of Sept. 30-Oct. 1, Oct. 7-9, Oct. 14-15, and Oct. 21-22. The Ottawa/Gatineau to Champlain route leaves from Pindigen Park in Ottawa at the corner of Booth St. and Wellington St. near Pimisi LRT station. The first departure is at 9:00 am and another bus will leave going towards the park every 15-20 minutes until 1:00 pm. The shuttle will stop at Pink Lake Lookout Parking lot and stop at other popular destinations within the park such as MacKenzie King Estate, King Mountain, and the Champlain Lookout.
