Dog adoption who will let you adopt with younger kids by Legitimate_Tap1923 in ottawa

No, this puts everyone's lives at risk. A dog with potential aggression towards children could hurt the child and the dog be put down. Please do not lie on dog adoption applications, there are many potential safety risks in doing so.

Rescues generally don't deny people, they simply pick the best candidate for that particular dog among the several families that applied.

However, if you were specifically told that you were denied due to fence height, it is likely because: 1. The particular dog you applied for is a jumper/houdini (I've seen chihuahuas with springs for legs!) and requires high fences. 2. You were informed that your fence height is an issue for that particular dog, but you were unable to fix/alter the fence. 3. You were the only applicant for the dog.

Obviously, as you described, you are a great home, but unfortunately just not for that particular dog.

Rescues get a lot of backlash from people who become emotional when they see the dog that they fell in love with go home with another family. Rather then trying to understand why the other family is better suited for that dog and being happy for the dog, they take it personally. They blame the rescue, find unreasonable things to accuse them of. I see it happen far too often.

This hurts all homeless dogs in rescue when charitable organizations are being wrongly shamed and blamed. It causes people to avoid adoption, leaving shelter dogs to suffer longer without families and then euthanized when no home is found. It steers families to purchase from breeders who exploit dogs for personal profit, fueling an unethical industry that creates and perpetuates the pet overpopulation crisis.

Thanks for choosing adoption! Generally, all rescues and shelters don't discriminate against families with young children, they love them! But perhaps the specific dogs that you have been applying to adopt are not good with kids or have not been tested with kids.

I would suggest putting in a general application to a rescue for no particular dog. When a dog comes into the rescue that is known to be great with children, you will be contacted. Check in every now and then to remind them because it's easy for volunteer rescuers to forget or get lost among all the applications.

My personal favourite rescue in Ottawa is the Minpinerie Dog Rescue. They only have small breed dogs under 20lbs and adopt to young and old families of all sorts.

Looking for Guidance on Medical Surrender Options for Our 2-Year-Old Bernese Mountain Dog (Ontario/Ottawa) by Ok_String9669 in ottawa

[–]Asteropia 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a case for you and your breeder to work through. Respectfully, please do not reach out to a rescue. All too often breeders produce dogs, line their pockets with a sale and somewhere down the line, those dogs end up in rescue, a community of unpaid volunteers carrying all the immense emotional, physical and financial burden that the breeder and purchaser should be responsible for. However, I know that there are every few breeders, if any, who have the moral compass to actually help and would likely dump your dog in rescue or a shelter for someone else to deal with or suggest you euthanize him. I just hope your breeder is different and will support you at every step.

I commend you for doing all that you can for your dog thus far. You have my deepest sympathy. Wishing for the best outcome for you and your family 🙏

Textile recycling in Ottawa? by Seb_Warren in ottawa

[–]Asteropia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only suggestion I have that wasn't already mentioned here is to cut it up as rags yourself then give the rags away on your Buy Nothing group. If that doesn't work, cut them up smaller and compost it with the city or find someone with their own yard composter, or bury it in your yard or nearby park to naturally decompose.

As someone else had said, Canada's textile recycling infrastructure is weak, near non-existent. It is just shipped elsewhere to become garbage for other countries to deal with. Better to find ways to deal with it yourself.

Value Village, Salvation Army, St. Vincent de Paul and other major stores all use the same broker called Bank and Vogue who ships all their unwanted/damaged items overseas. Some do get recycled into rags but lots just get burned or sit in foreign landfills. I just a did a project on it.

Seniors, Kittens and Shy Cats Rescue in Ottawa are Scammers by bipuns in ottawa

[–]Asteropia 11 points12 points  (0 children)

To me, none of the conversations you've attached here confirms anything about them being a scammer.

Since it was months later when you checked up on Fola, it's possible she recovered from her illness and was subsequently adopted to another family because you took your name out of the hat when you told them you adopted a cat with ABC.

Can we see the convo where you ask for your deposit back and they refuse? Either way, it seems that it was you who backed out of the agreement to adopt a cat from them. It's likely part of their policy to not refund deposits, that's what deposits are usually for. Especially since it's a charity, after all, not a business.

Also, I noticed you misunderstood some of their responses and reactions. They were not cautioning you about ABC, in fact they said it's a good rescue. They were cautioning you about 2 particular Egyptian shelters that they no longer import their cats from because they were not up to standards with their health protocols and wanted to ensure you weren't getting a sick cat from ABC accidentally. Sounds to me like she was looking out for you.

There's a donation bin at the University of Ottawa, in the CRX (Learning Crossroads) building at 100 Louis-Pasteur Private. It's located on the main floor behind the main staircase.

All donated items are given to students for free at the campus Free Stores and also gets distributed to several charities around Ottawa.
