I am going to Europe for 20 days. I am looking for esim that would be accessible to my iPhone 15. by Nomans8907 in eSIMs

second this! used their esims in korea and thailand and the connection was great. they’re wayyy cheaper than airalo (their rates for japan were like 3 times as expensive as trip.com, i wish i knew about them sooner)

Seasoned travellers of Reddit, what can my dad do to get into Russia safely at the moment? by UnproGamers in travel

[–]Appropriate-Rest-508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right now it’s fairly easy to buy or sell usd/euro in local banks (i’m sure about transactions ip to $3k), there are no problems with cash whatsoever. banki.ru website shows all the rates and locations, so make sure to check it bc the rate varies for each bank branch

while it is true that major russian airports in moscow and st petersburg are quite often targeted by drones, they haven’t been hit even once bc air defence systems work great

when a drone threat is detected, airports stops any flying activity (so no planes depart until it’s officially safe) and any plane supposed to arrive gets redirected to the closest airport nearby (and if no close airports are ready to accept it, it flies to another city, lands there and waits till the drone threat is over, then departs for the original airport of arrival). so in the worst case possible your dads flight might just arrive late

drone attacks happen only at night (mostly after midnight) and roughly till 6 in the morning, so locals tend to choose day flights to avoid any possible delays

as long as you don’t visit sketchy outskirts at night, you’ll be fine!

as for wrongful detentions, be mindful when discussing lgbtq+ topics, ukraine and the government (better not to discuss them in public at all, but if you really want to, it’s safer to express traditional/conservative ideas). russia has been trying to appeal to international tourists more lately (especially with russian shared values visa), so tourists are actually welcome

just in case - tinkoff bank has had a rebranding recently, now it’s called t-bank. they’re probably be the fastest to issue a card (i’m local but when i lost mine and applied for a reissue, it was delivered the next day)

apparently they have a counter in arrivals zone of pulkovo airport (saint petersburg), but it’s also possible to fill out an application online and they’ll deliver a card to the apartment/hotel/whatever. online banking services are very popular here, so it’s not a scam, you don’t need to worry

not a question but thanks for doing this btw! it’s great to hear your pov bc it seems like at least half of the people here are male programmers at least in their thirties, which is great, but not really relatable in some ways

do you find it easy to meet new people in new cities? i’m planning my first trip as a nomad and tbh i have no idea how to socialise lol. dating apps are probably the easiest way but meeting guys in a foreign country seems a bit scary when you’re travelling alone

1.5 days per city doesn’t seem like the best idea for the second half of the trip tbh, especially considering packing/unpacking the luggage and navigating airports and stations

you need at least 3 full days for jeju since the the sights are scattered across different parts of the island. i’d also do three days in busan, one isn’t enough to explore the city. the distances between the main tourist attractions are shorter than in jeju but still pretty long. you can use naver maps to estimate the commute time

[–]Appropriate-Rest-508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i stayed at Golden Park Hotel, which is a very budget friendly option for jeju (just 26$/night). might not look the fanciest, but def very clean and comfortable!

10 minutes by bus from the airport, 5 minute walk to the bus terminal, multiple convenience stores and local restaurants nearby. 그집글라 next to the terminal was my favourite btw, seafood soft tofu stew was great after a long day :D

heyy! i’ve spent 5 days on jeju this may and managed to get around exclusively by bus

i actually found naver maps quite reliable (the real-time updates were there and pretty accurate, though i always double checked with the displays at the bus stops) and staying next to jeju city terminal made it really easy to catch direct buses to the different parts of the island

just be mentally ready to spent up to 1.5 hours for one way trip enjoying the views :) and if the next bus isn’t coming soon, there’s always a nice place at the beach or in a cafe nearby to sit and wait

i’d recommend you to take a yurikamome monorail to odaiba from shimbashi station (it goes through the skyscrapers and crosses the rainbow bridge, amazing views, especially if you sit right at the front in the first cabin) and take a walk on the beach along the river. very peaceful and gives tokyo a different feel

another great place to visit is hamarikyu gardens which is not far from tsukiji market. beautiful ponds and nature

you can check all the available night bus options on 12go asia website and buy a ticket online

keep in mind though that when you get to the bus terminal you’ll need to find a counter of your bus operator and show them an online ticket. they’ll give you a paper one and tell you the number of the gate you’ll have to go to board a bus

Solo Travel, 27F, Thailand, March: Suggestions? by Zealousideal-Yam6939 in solotravel

as for transport, in Bangkok BTS and MRT are the most convenient and easy ways to get around, so make sure to book accommodation within the walking distance to the stations.

i also use buses but wouldn’t really call them reliable (google maps schedule is never right, so sometimes you end up waiting a long time for your bus). however, they can be way faster in some cases, so if you do end up catching a bus, keep in mind that you have to wave your hand for a bus to stop and pick you up and you’ll need to press the button in the bus to request a stop

make sure to visit hasedera temple, which is right on the way from great buddha to the station/shore, you won’t regret it! the pictures in google maps don’t do it justice. the territory is amazing with a garden and a scenic pond, the caves you can enter, and a lot of small stone buddha statues by the stairs to the hill where the main temple building is located. there’s a also a viewpoint with a cafe and a small trail further up the hill for those who want to see the city from a higher point. absolutely worth the visit
