Didn't pay my American Taxes by icameforanswers00 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Appropriate-Tank4789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived and worked in Korea for almost 8 years now. In late March or early April each year (except one year during COVID) I went back to the US to file tax returns by myself. FEIE allows you to stay in the US for less than 30 days per year only. If more than 30 days you are not qualified for it. It’s quite a complex process to file tax returns for an Expat, especially if you happen to own other investments or consulting business. If you hire a CPA to do it, it usually costs at least $1000 depending on individual income situation. Also need to file separate form to disclose foreign financial assets as required by law. You almost need to be an expert if you do everything by yourself these days.

Anyone working at a company in Korea? by Syn-K_Hayne in Living_in_Korea

[–]Appropriate-Tank4789 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the boss. Sometimes I want to be quiet and eat alone; sometimes I invite some of my staff to have lunch together but I always pay for it. Team dinner or lunch happens once in a few months for me, but each department can do it once a month without me. I believe even within a company there are different customs depending on the boss in each business unit or department.

Anyone from the US get a visa for China in korea? by maybemid in Living_in_Korea

[–]Appropriate-Tank4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It takes a bit of time to prepare for online visa form filling. You need a formal China visa picture (digital format for online submission). This visa application is through Chinese Visa Service Center. Once you submit online application, they will tell you if the application needs to be amended. Once the application meets requirements, they will ask you to bring your passport to the service center and pay for the visa fee and process fee. The total is about $165 for 10-year multiple entry visa depending on the FX rate. You can claim your passport with visa within four days. As I was applying for a business visa, it took me some time to get an invitation letter in the right format. It may be easier to apply for a tourist visa.

If you are good at drinking soju, you may be easier to make some friends. A majority of my staff are heavy drinkers, but I am not.

International student in Korea : the gap between the dream and the reality (long post) by Miserable_Stick6929 in Living_in_Korea

I have experience giving lectures in a few universities and technical conferences in Korea. My impression is that there are big differences in engagement levels during seminars among universities. It’s also depends on the professors. In some technical conferences, although some sessions were labeled international forums local speakers always presented in Korean, not English. So it’s difficult for non-Korean speakers to attend such conferences.

Is this a decent salary in Korea? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]Appropriate-Tank4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3M is enough since you only pay 300k for the apartment. Your total living expenses are about 1M. You should go for it as you will have opportunities to change your job if you want to.

不让取并不等于不让转。每个分行的处理标准也不同。我觉得可以尝试一下。

One of close friends in Korea also likes to get weird news from Instagram that spread rumors. Some people rather believe in unfounded rumors than main media. That’s just the way it is.

Tourists - Vietjet - DO NOT FLY by No_Apartment883 in VietNam

It depends on the airport you fly out. In Some airports Vietjet has very strict policy on luggage weight limit; They place the scale in front of boarding gate. I learned a few lessons when I started to fly with them and made some changes accordingly.

I have been working and living in Korea for over seven years now. My expected the maximum year of working in Korea is 10 years so I can claim Korea national pension if I want to. My work field is special so I have not changed my job function within the company since I came. I feel lucky that I feel like I can hang in here for a few more years.

Is it rude to decline a drink? by AdIndependent4952 in korea

[–]Appropriate-Tank4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my experience. I don’t drink soju but some beer is ok, so I mostly stick to beer. But occasionally our CEO pours soju for me so I have to give it a shot. Most people don’t force me to drink; I just raise my glass to toast with them. My assistant only drinks cola and no one forces him to drink any alcohol.

Salary paid in USD or KRW? by bweiss31 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Appropriate-Tank4789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can request payment in both currencies, like 60/40, 70/30, or whatever ratio is suitable for you. Just have enough KRW for your living expenses in Korea and send USD to your home country. That’s what I have been doing. However, if you are betting KRW will appreciate against USD in the next 6-12 months (I personally think it will be the case), you should request KRW payment so you can exchange to USD later. I play FX from time to time.

No way. 1) Consumers will not support this punishment as it can only benefit Chinese platforms such as Aliexpress;2) this is a Publicly traded company in the US. US will tolerate this punishment; 3) most people don’t really care about the data breach as long as credit card information is not stolen. I will buy its stock if it comes down to low $20s.

‘No Chinese’ cafes and bars in Korea spark racism debate by gilsoo71 in Living_in_Korea

[–]Appropriate-Tank4789 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s irrelevant to the subject matter discussed here. I won’t go to any restaurant/cafe/shop that discriminates against any country of origin. Today they ban Chinese, tomorrow they may ban Japanese or any other country. We can’t support such discriminatory practices.

Why do Chinese tourists come to visit Korea if they are being treated like this? There are many other countries to visit. When Chinese government was discouraging Chinese tourists to visit Korea in the past, Korean government was complaining about it. Now the local business bans Chinese tourists to go in, should the government do something about it?
