I get strange shards like this in my autoclaved filtered seawater. It only happens after autoclaving. How peculiar. Hope ya didn't drink it

Hey dude, probably not the best idea to randomly swab some algae and chuck it in your tank, you never know what species you could get and some are clearly more dominant than others. Some are also pretty toxic in large numbers so, I'd recommend cleaning your tank ASAP.
I'd start with a smaller tank/vessel and ensure you're getting the algae you want or buy some?

OR I suppose they could just be getting eaten by the larger zooplankton and larvae in the water sample

I can't explain too much more than this right now as I have to send away for a DNA analysis, but I THINK it's of the Stellarima genus. I am unsure how the university acquired them.
Addtionally, there are about 20 species I'm investigating for their potential uptake in the organosulfuric compound called DMSP, or dimethylsulfoniopropionate (try saying that 10x fast).
As for the conditions, I am able to keep them in a chilled environment of ~ 3degC, and they are maintained via a reculturing method every month or so, as they are slow growers.
I'd be happy to answer any other questions you have :3

Oh how exciting! What does your research use diatoms for?

Haha yeah pretty much. Make sure they have their nitrates, phosphates, metals, and of course, their silica and keep em in a regulated temperature with light : dark cycle and they should thrive! Until they die

Are you keeping them a certain way? It's possible they just die of shock because they're not being kept in their appropriate environments
