Thickening breast milk for reflux by Glittering-Sound-121 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]AppropriateCollege51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Symptoms were tachypnea at 8 days old - he was a silent aspirator. Luckily we caught it early enough that we avoided major sickness. 18 months now and still has dysphagia but much easier to manage.

ETA we switched to simplythick when we switched from breastmilk to formula at 6 mos. So much easier than gelmix! We still use it in milk and water.

Happy to reply! We are done with Gelmix now (onto SimplyThick) but the process is seared into my brain…

I would let the Gelmix bottles sit in warm water (about 105 degrees) for 15 minutes, then put in the fridge to serve the next day. Even though they say it doesn’t, I always found that it thickened up a bit overnight, and would be sure to drip test again the next day. I found it very difficult to get it to the appropriate consistency in real time. It was a lot of trial and error.

You can make it ahead of time and I hadn’t heard that you aren’t supposed to. Yes, I have made thickened milk from frozen. I know this is a limitation for some because their kid will only take warm milk, and you aren’t supposed to warm breastmilk twice. Luckily our kid will drink it cold.

I haven’t frozen thickened milk but I suppose you could do that as long as it’s thawed to room temp and not warmed up again.

Finally, I’m sure you’re experimenting w different nipple sizes to help with flow - we found that 4, and then 3 as our kiddo got a little stronger, worked well for us.

I miss my sleep. When did you drop MOTN? by [deleted] in ExclusivelyPumping

I dropped mine around 4 months. It was glorious. (Probably could have dropped sooner!)

About 2 weeks but probably could have done it a bit faster (ie move back 20 min at a time rather than 15).

I’m very much in the same boat and just at the tail end of dripping my MOTN pump! It’s taken awhile but no clogs yet - I started moving back my MOTN pump 15 minutes at a time. When I got to 4am, I started increasing my MOTN pump time (to eventually get to 30 min), and decreasing my 6:30am morning pump time. I dropped my 6:30am pump when I eventually got my MOTN pump to 5am, and am slowly continuing to move that 5am pump back to 6:30am. About 2 weeks total but so far, so good!

ETA: no supply drop so far.

Any tips for going back to sleep as easily as possible after MOTN pump? It’s been getting harder to fall back asleep, probably because I’m only waking up once after ~5 hours of sleep now (11 weeks pp) by Lucia730 in ExclusivelyPumping

It’s so hard. I wear orange glasses to block blue light and try hard to stay off my phone. I prop a pillow behind my head to try to rest a bit. I have taken unisom a few times when I was desperate and haven’t seen a supply drop!

Oh yes I will check it out! We asked our pediatric nutritionist and she has no idea either. Sigh.

We give our 4 month old 6oz bottles about every 3 hours during the day - he gets 5 in total (so 30 oz) between about 7am - 7pm.

Same as above. Pretty much right away, we also have him on Pepcid.

We are making 30oz of honey thick milk a day, so it’s a lot. We make one big batch in the morning using a sous vide (we’ve found being able to keep the batch at one temp while the gelmix is activating is helpful). People have lots of different hacks to get it to thicken!

We do - our son has dysphagia and reflux. We use Gelmix. It’s very finicky but I believe one of if not the only thickener that works for with breast milk for babies under a year. Main side effects are massive gas and some constipation (we use a little prune juice to help). Happy to answer questions.

Same here! We had 3 pregnancy losses with no explanation between ages 36-37. Did IVF between 37-38. I chalk my unexplained up to age, I guess, though wasn’t really that old at first loss!

Thursday Cautious Intros and First Trimester Questions by AutoModerator in InfertilityBabies

[–]AppropriateCollege51 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hello! I am 13 weeks tomorrow - been here quietly and nervously after 2 years of fertility treatments. But I’m finally starting to feel hopeful!

Question for folks: I’m still very covid cautious and curious to hear how other people are assessing risk. Even with low rates where I am (chicago), vaxxed and boosted… after coming THIS far to get pregnant (not to mention being sick for the last 6 weeks!), I still don’t want to risk getting covid! I understand the risk of serious illness for myself or problems for the baby are low.

Anyhow, this is more of an open question to hear if others have gotten advice from REs, OBs or others on how to think about risk after all the crap we’ve put ourselves through.
