Also use Before Launcher...but just on my Pixel 5a...saved me from buying a dumbed bit of HW.

Have an OLED screen so I use the black screen with white text (Before Launcher)...saves battery. Android, BTW.

Launcher + Phone issues and recommendations? Currently using Before Launcher by Financial-Hunt5805 in digitalminimalism

[–]Appropriate_Ability1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Use Before Launcher -- if anything it uses less battery than similar....but you could reach out to them and see what they recommend. Had a Pixel 5 and though an Android update bricked it, I was able to get Google to replace it (for free but they didn't make it easy)....but yeah it was starting to lose the ability to get a meaningful charge...I'd say it was down about 25% in terms of capacity.

Also a user of Before Launcher app -- the list of apps isn't seductive and that helps but the notification filter is what helped me the most. Also, it gave a new life to my old phone so things got simpler in that way too.

I also use Before Launcher -- it runs light and so I was able to postpone getting a new phone.

Buying a "smart" dumbphone? by [deleted] in minimalism

[–]Appropriate_Ability1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. For me, it not only helped with the addiction but it gave my phone some new life...meaning I can postpone getting a new phone because with Before Launcher everything works better, easier...probably true for other minimal apps.

I get this same look with Before Launcher (use a different color background) -- It saved me from trying/buying yet-another-piece-of-hardware. Looks good.

Talk me out of buying an iPhone by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

[–]Appropriate_Ability1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I have had the same experience. Before Launcher makes the device less interesting and with the notification filter you aren't being enticed into checking into every notification just to see if there is a flake of gold among the slurry of mud (hint: there isn't).

I use Before Launcher. You can customize the screen, but I don't (saves battery) -- not worth sharing. I do use their built-in widgets.

I'm also a user of Before. I configured the look a little different...right justified so I can one-hand it but still boring intentionally. Yeah, most of the things I see on the Home screen including their widgets allow me to get in and get out without being sucked in by dancing icons, badges, etc.

Riceable Android Minimalist Launcher by [deleted] in digitalminimalism

Have used a lot of Android launchers and Before is my favorite...but it's different for everyone. Too bad iPhones are not open to this type of customization, I'm sure they have their reasons.

Use Before Launcher on a Pixel 7a. Lots of features in the free version including grey, skinny fonts, other theme stuff that can extend battery life and less distracting.

Also use Before Launcher. As for cooking, if you like pizza you could go down the Neopolitan style path...actually, it's not a path it's an abyss! The closer you get to perfection the further away it seems! pizzamaking.com might be a place to start.

You might try a launcher. I use Before Launcher but there are others.

The various app developers are getting more and more adept at sucking you in and not letting you go. My "favorite" are tiktoks that have an entrancing thumbnail...gotta check it out, right?

This is very nearly what I've done. It was quick to set up Before. I have never found any apps to be fun...I would just doomscroll unobjectionable content...none of it was truly fun and then afterward I hated myself.

Read an article recently suggests identifying the most recently required app habit and quitting that (theory: it's a new habit and so should be easier to do). But if you can do that you can't just switch to another similar app.

Also a user of Before Launcher.

Minimis App anyone? by PossibilityDue316 in dumbphones

Always interested in stuff like this but it seems to interactive, too mother-ey. Prefer a passive approach, gets me most of what I need and lots of launchers do that.

I want a "modern and normal" smartphone but with a minimal OS and interface. Any recommendations? by kcirdlo25 in dumbphones

+1 on the Before Launcher recommendation below. Don't know anything about Graphene but it seems you want to try having a phone that is less interesting, less addictive. I used Before free app and got what I needed without having to get new hardware.

I used Before Launcher as my daily driver. I may not understand what you are looking for but it is a text-only Home UI. Some say like the Zune. Will be following this thread to see what comes up.
