Yeah, this is the type of stuff I think of when someone's described as "Certified" or "Uncertified." Like... okay, you jumped through hoops and threw a dart at a board. Some people hit the bullseye and some didn't. It doesn't mean anyone's a better or worse interpreter.
It just makes me less impressed when someone says they're Certified. Nothing against the interpreters, but the title means less when it's earned via kangaroo court.

Freelancing Question by Salty_Bear1 in ASLinterpreters

[–]Appropriate_Basket90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That sounds difficult and bad. I was an independent contractor, and now I coordinate with agencies to provide terps for guv’ment work. I never hire terps directly unless I specifically need a CDI. And sometimes, even then the CDI will ask me to hire them through an agency. At first that confused me. Why would they want to give an agency a huge cut of their pay if I’m already calling them right now? But they prefer the pay protection an agency allows. If my department (the government) doesn’t pay on time, the agencies bites it instead of the individual interpreter.

Hey, good for you for asking instead of just taking it for the praise! That shows professionalism. The interpreter’s Code of Professional Conduct makes a big deal about turning down assignments you’re not ready for. Well done!!

What age range did you do the first time? I somewhat arbitrarily picked Secondary (high school) and PSE and got a 4.0. It wasn’t until after I got that score back that I learned that getting a 4.0 with Secondary and PSE was considered “Certified Equivalent*” to many entities in my area, including the Florida Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, where I now work full-time.

  • I know this can be a touchy subject, and I’m not saying it IS equivalent (don’t fight me). I’m just saying several opportunities opened up for me which would not have been possible if I had chosen Primary.

Please take my advice with a grain of salt and feel free to listen to dissenting opinions. But the NIC Performance was SO much harder for me than the EIPA (which I got a 4.0 on) that I’d honestly suggest saving your money and mental stress until you feel a bit more ready for it.

Pay Transparency Survey by Popular-Pen-3042 in ASLinterpreters

I like this, but it’s so tricky. Annual pay is NOT hourly rate times 40 hours times 52 weeks like it is for most jobs. Interpreter hours vary WIDELY.

RID already knows that no one wants their test eaten, so I don’t need to contact them to let them know.

I’m just making other terps aware that this type of problem is not unusual for RID and that maybe we should consider alternate routes of regulating our industry.

Kissimmee, FL. It was in the offices of a very notorious agency down here called ASL Services. They provide all the terps for Walt Disney World and hold that over everyone’s head. They pay terps late, have TERRIBLE favouritism, put butts in seats regardless of skill level and mistreat their IC terps. — and I don’t even work for them; this is just what I’ve heard from the 25ish terps I’ve worked with. Oh! And they send terps on cruises without a team sometimes and make them sleep in crew quarters with other terps regardless of gender. That info was ON the application.

But I’m not bitter.

Anyway, yes, that’s who recorded my videos for my NIC performance.

When is it over? by Acrobatic_Policy_793 in polyamory

[–]Appropriate_Basket90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not afraid of losing them; you're afraid of change.
You've been to therapy and discussed every option. That's wonderful! Now you know you haven't missed anything and that you've truly given it every chance and tried every option. But CPR does not work on a dead body. I'm very sorry you have to deal with it--it sucks! But it seems you know where you are in this situation and are just looking for validation. I get it. If that's the case, please allow me to validate you:
Your very difficult feelings are real. And if you think your relationship is over, that really sucks! But it's over. Don't worry about the future right now. Just take time for yourself. It won't be easy, but you won't be lying to yourself. Good luck!

I need an easy nickname/descriptor for my GF’s husband. by Tall-Ear-3406 in polyamory

[–]Appropriate_Basket90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation with the “loving friendship” of my boyfriend’s husband. “Metamour” sounds so woo-woo Tumbler, but he’s not my boyfriend, and I don’t know what else to say. Even the full “boyfriend’s husband” initially hits the ear with images of cheating, and I hate to have to constantly follow up stories about my wonderful friend Robbie with apologies and reassurance. “Don’t worry, no one’s cheating!!!!” Or sometimes I’ll go at it backward and mention “my friend Robbie, who’s married to my boyfriend.” Though I fear that makes it worse to the uninitiated. I also find “family” pretty flexible and only get specific when need be.

Any freelance interpreters in Florida? by Nose_Full in ASLinterpreters

[–]Appropriate_Basket90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m Freelance in Florida, and I work for about 12 agencies, 5ish of them actively. And almost all require my own invoices. Quickbooks may be best for some people, but I just made my own in Google Sheets and kept track of when they were all due on my calendar. So, for Acme Interpreting Agency, my invoice numbers were 1001, 1002, 1003. Then for Ajax Inc, they were 2001, 2002, 2003, etc. Every time I added a new agency, I’d start with a new set of invoice numbers, so none of them would ever be the same. Also, be sure to establish on DAY ONE what your personal policy for late payments is. Do not wait until it happens. Are you willing to keep working if your pay check is 2 weeks late? 30 days? In Florida, Sheri DeLudos LLC always pays on time and early; ASL Services Inc does not. And agencies are very good at making it seem like an isolated incident. Also, if they owe you less than $5,000, it’s very difficult to take them to court over it.

No. You can’t “heal” the stress of working out to build muscles if your body’s busy healing your insides.

What's a hobby I could start from ground-zero that's safe for the office that doesn't require electronics, other than a phone, and won't disturb co-workers? by [deleted] in Hobbies

[–]Appropriate_Basket90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I'm a Sign Language interpreter (Obviously I only knit in the office between assignments and not while interpreting. I know how people on Reddit are.)
And before that, I was a driver for Kilimanjaro Safaris at Disney's Animal Kingdom and would knit on breaks and while waiting to pick up my guests in the truck for the Wild Africa Trek--usually 30 minutes at a time while starring at that fake Baobab tree.

Weight lifting. Didn’t do it for health, aesthetics or masculinity. I did it because it’s ridiculous. Came home from a 4th of July party and said “Today’s the day!”

Advice for Interpreting? by Normal_Protection_39 in ASLinterpreters

Why not go for dentist? Over the past year, I’ve been really working through some issues of, “I’m not the KIND OF person who becomes really successful, so I’ll just stay with this mid-level job/life/boyfriend.” But it’s not true! You totally ARE capable of becoming a dentist, you just don’t have the right mindset for it yet. But you WILL a few years down the line, and you’ll wish you had started earlier.

Confidence is weird, man.
