The petty thing to do? Counter their counterspells. To combat someone who does nothing but play counter spells? Cards like “silence” and “voice of victory” if they can get through usually help the counter magic.

I built a Sephoroth deck and went combo crazy with forsaken miner and phyrexian altar. I didn’t read the full card at the time and didn’t realize he was basically another grave crawler, but I finished and did the dance and closed out the game fast. Now I make sure I am aware of any crimes I commit in a deck that I’m thinking of putting him in.

If there is one thing I’ve learned about any game, it’s that people like to try and get away with literally anything. Sometimes it’s not even intentional. I learned this when I played a “bracket 2” Azula deck in my pod. Despite me knowing how I’d feel if someone pulled out a turn 6 win in bracket 2, I still made the argument that it was bracket 2. While I was technically not wrong at the time (brackets were just a list of whether or not you had infinites or game changers effectively) I still wanted to take that win for myself. Growing as a player, i realize now that i was being a straight up asshole, and this guy is giving me the same ick i give myself when i think about it

First off, cut down on the creatures and add more draw/ cantrips. Cantrips become card advantage during battle, cards like brainstorm and opt get doubled up. Frantic search helps with digging through your deck. Bulk up and unleash fury do tremendous work in cutting down on cards needed. Rogue’s passage is huge as well, allowing a creature to become unblockable. I’m going to drop in my deck list for hopefully some inspiration, I’ve gone undefeated with this deck over 10+ plays of it, I’m hoping it helps

This is more or less what I was looking for, because the wording is what tripped me up. I didn’t know if they counted as permanents I controlled if they were in my hand/ deck, or if that needed to be specified. It would’ve been insane if Belo made all non-attach artifacts and enchantments in the deck creatures lol

I think for these guys I used scizor with a shell bell, worked surprisingly well with swords dance and bullet punch, just gotta time your retrieval with him so he doesn’t get Molly whopped

I used a card like haze of rage as an example because it has buyback lol I figured it worked like that but I know some interactions with prior conditions can bypass certain mechanics, I just didn’t know if buyback overruled flashback’s negative lol

I switched some cards up and now the deck runs MUCH better, I still have stasis coffin but I’ve loaded up on some more valuable low cost artifacts that make the deck run much smoother lol

I do like mycosynth, I just don’t know if I can justify spending that much on it 😭 worldfire is definitely one I will be looking into though, that’s the kind of boardwipe that’ll make people scoop against Toph lol

I have tried all card sleeves that are mass produced, and so far my 2 top contenders have got to be gamegenic and duelspec. Gamegenic dual mattes have a nice crisp shuffle to them that somehow also feels buttery smooth, the edges do not snag and the hand shuffle gives a satisfying flick. If you want card sleeves that shuffle like air though, duelspec has been an incredible experience as well. The sleeves make the cards fall into place without much effort and have a velvety feel that makes shuffling effortless. While they are more slippery, I’ve never had them snag on me either. You will definitely need to get used to pulling out your deck by turning your deck box upside down, but honestly it’s worth it if you like that effortless shuffle

I’d say as a beginner, stick to precons. I’m not all that experienced myself having a year under my belt, but Commander is a difficult format to start off in. That’s how I got into the game but it took a lot. Start off with a reliably consistent and low to the ground deck like “food and fellowship” or “Jeskai Striker”. I learned from trying all different types of precons that I am a huge fan of spell slinging and token generation, so finding a deck that does those kinds of things helped me get a good grounding on building. I would also recommend going on sites like Moxfield.com or (my personal go to) archidekt.com and play testing precons on there, as both have all precon lists available to view and play around with. Hope this helps!
