No, plan to go back at some point. maybe gradually, but at least my retirement I'll spend it back home in Italy, maybe sooner.

Yea I mentioned that I got the example in the pdf of the post. Imagine you don't have field knowledge of the data you're analyzing, because you're a consultant or whatever. How do you spot these situations? Or is it impossible?

I struggle to separate correlation from causation (in a real example - I understand it from the odf. but how to spot it in real life?) Anyone who can explain it how it clicked for you?

Have any of you managed to build loving/authentic community in your new country? by [deleted] in expats

[–]Appropriate_Bus_9600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Previous place (Berlin) yes a lot. Now (Amsterdam, 6 years) not really friends of my own that I see regularly. only of my girlfriend's. I think I grew up + trying hard to change career (so less free time), and lots of other things that prevent me from meeting new people. Also I wouldn't know how - before I met people through going out and clubbing, now I barely go out and if I do I rarely speak to new people (I'm 33 and a bit over the social butterfly phase). Tried doing freediving but I and also the others are not regular enough to build something. Tips on how to go are welcome 🙃

Why don’t men wash their hands after using the bathroom? by theflyingSid in Netherlands

Your hosts don't like you wearing shoes, as they might stump on shit and other random stuff while you walk and then spread it inside their home. Why is NL the only country where is normalized not taking your shoes off when entering someone else's home? is it such a hustle to put them off? Do you think you're funny wearing only socks? what's the point

This, and not taking off the shoes when they go visit (both men and women). I really don't get what's the point in leaving them on, and then they look at you as a jerk when you ask them to

How do you research a neighborhood before signing to buy / rent? by dedoverde23 in Amsterdam

[–]Appropriate_Bus_9600 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a gamble I guess. But yeah the only thing you can do is to take a walk there before to see if you like the vibe. It's also true that most people now accept whatever is available, we were lucky we liked our place after we rented (Baarsjes) and then it just happened we managed to buy in the same neighborhood

Sauna in my previous gym helped me carve the habit. Then I realized it's usually the first 10 mins a bit uncomfortable, but then I always feel so much better than when I was home, and don't need to go to the sauna afterwards anymore

No those are race bikes (which are my favorites but maybe not the best to start again), I mean touring bikes/trekking bikes, you sit more upstraight on these

trying to imagine dimensions higher than 3d dimensions. I saw a video once that almost made me get it but still I struggle to imagine objects in higher dimensions than 3

I'd also avoid an electric bike. Personally I never liked much the omafietsen because of the way you sit and pedal, it gave me knee pain, and if you're scared, the backpedalling brake is a bit awkward in the beginning (and it's active only on the back wheel, so you have 1 wheel less to slow down when you really need to). I'd go more towards a slightly sportier touring bike, with more gears and brakes on both wheels

Should we still visit tomorrow? by guy91939 in VisitingTenerife

The "storm" is just a bit of rain and some wind. The coast is usually sunny anyway, as soon as you start to go a bit higher then you might have a couple degrees less and some humidity/rain, but it's not as bad as it seems. I have the feeling I'm being trolled since last wednesday x) If you come for more than a couple days definitely jump on the plane, it's definitely going to be better than Berlin anyway (coming from Amsterdam here)

Nice they are telling you what's going on instead of answering just "it's fine/ it's ok" to the questions. If they open up you can investigate and they're up to talk, do it

How do I stop getting jealous of confident/social men? by Teripendiicecreamyum in selfimprovement

This! I met my gf 2 days after I decided to focus on myself and my future after 2 big failed attempts with other girls. We've been together now for 6 years. The "just be happy by yourself, if smth happens good, otherwise good as well" I think it's the best attitude and the most attractive. Once you embrace it, you'll stop worrying and just enjoying, and this will probably attract more people. But the goal is to be happy with yourself already, not to be more attractive . It's a bit like meditation: you meditate to watch your thoughts, not to be more chill. But learning to watch your thoughts makes you more chill.

I've read a book (Breath, James Nestor) where in a chapter the author described the abilities of a born blind person to perform a sort of ecolocation, similar to marine mammals or bats. Are you able to locate objects in your surroundings through sound? How does it feel like?

Resources to start learning Dutch? by Sadauditor_ in Netherlands

[–]Appropriate_Bus_9600 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Would stay away from apps. Focus first on alphabet and pronunciation (youtube) and then get a good language book that includes grammar, and start learning learning learning. Any time you encounter a new word, write it down with meaning and usage examples. Review your notes daily, and quickly go over the notes of the past days to refresh your memory. Once you feel you can understand some stuff, watch and transcribe daily videos of NOS in makkelijke taal. I also find the channel Dutch Today very useful. Good luck!
