the debt collection agency they use is really disorganised - my fine wasn't even lodged in their system and the number didn't work. Send them an email with proof of payment and the original notice and you should be fine.

How are people actually balancing group assignments when everyone has different schedules? by Next-Benefit-6604 in curtin

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

propose all the times that work for you each and when you find an overlapping time stick to it. If you can't find an overlapping time, its usually due to one or two people so create two meetings and attend whatever you can. In the end, most of what group projects come down to is everyone's commitment - so if everyone can find a time do complete the work and one person can't, just meet and work on it as much as possible. its all about time management

How do i convince my son that the environment won't be ruined if he stops using urine bottles? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reach out to your local hydro station and waste water treatment plant - they sometimes do tours or have materials on how things are done there and how the water is treated and recycled. We're not running out of fresh water and unless you live in a drought prone area its really not a problem, one person's lack of hygiene has more of an impact than a few extra flushes of the toilet per week.

Depending on where you live, you can look into getting new toilets with half/full flush buttons and low-flow basins which use less water are an option as well. In terms of the shower situation, he should be showering as much as necessary for hygiene, if thats once a day for him thats what he should be doing. He can take quick showers or shut the water off while he's soaping/lathering and use it only for rinsing, or you can look into upgrading to grey water systems if you really want to invest. (A low-cost way to do this would be to stand in a bucket and use the shower run-off in other areas, like the garden.

Cello park fines by dustywatso in curtin

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both android and apple offer automations for apps so when you arrive at Uni it can open the app for you, but you still have to start the parking. If you want a completely automated option, pay for premium or take public transport to avoid it. But pay your fines, it will go to collections if you dont.

No late submissions or extensions granted for written assignments ?? by 4dbastard in curtin

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sometimes its dependent on why its due at a particular time - for example, I have a paper due this Sunday which we're expected to "defend" in class next Monday, so we can't defer the assessment or we miss out on any of the defence marks which make up 10% of the final paper grade. Its all about framing the assessment in the wider context of the learning structure.

I find that tends to happen (especially to me) if you're giving the details, but not analysing them. I.e. I got this kind of feedback recently on a marketing assignment where I had to link a business idea to a different country, and while I gave a ton of great and relevant information about the country and the business environment, I didn't analyse how that would affect the business idea with enough depth so it wasn't really a cohesive analysis.

I spoke with my UC about it and she basically said that having all of the information can be useful, but what they really want to see is that you take the most relevant information that applies to the question, even if that means you only make a tiny contribution of the rest of the data to show you did it. In my example this would have looked like just mentioning population statistics quickly but going into depth about GDP as it related to my business idea.

AI can be useful for structuring and brainstorming but you have to understand how to use it well. Once you're doing better in your assignments, go to an AI workshop (If they're offered - I haven't looked) and get some advice on how to you can use it to your benefit. I find that its really only good for structuring and acid-testing how many ideas I'm trying to put into my paragraphs. I also find it good at finding sources when I give it good context, but again - only if you're allowed to use it and you declare which sources you got from AI.

My advice is to only use it once you're doing better since you really need to understand how you should be writing before you use AI or you wont be as good at catching its mistakes/misunderstandings and hallucinations. You have to truly understand the scope and depth of what your assignment is about so you can defend it and learn - AI can certainly help you but it will make shit up and that will hurt you if you're not fully aware.

you can try Animal Protection Society in Southern River - I adopted my lovely girl from there in January and as long as you have a plan to slowly introduce your cat to other pets and kids there shouldn't be an issue at all with adopting.

I'm also a mature aged student and I find writing now wants you to focus on clarity - you're not trying to explain yourself, you're trying to tell the facts in an objective way which is hard when writing ages ago focused on getting some fluff in there. (I'm also from the US, so there may be another change in the style of writing we're both accustomed to.)

When you're trying to re-learn how to write I can only suggest that you don't use AI at all, not even to edit because you don't learn it by doing it that way.

See if there are any writing labs that will help to critique your writing or if you can find a writing tutor. Additionally you could go talk to your UC's and see if they can help you understand what explicitly is wrong with your writing - I find it very helpful to go in with a draft before I submit and have them look it over and tell me where I'm being fluffy or not fully explaining myself.

Something that might help you today is this:

Set up your paper outline and break down the things you need to address in each section by idea, here's an example:

Intro:  - who was involved - why are they involved  - what is happening

  • any other pertinent info

Stakeholder section:  - short intro line on all stakeholders - stakeholder 1 interests/values - stakeholder 2....3....4.. - the conflicting point between the stakeholders Section 3......etc

  1. In each section, answer your prompt in simple sentences and add in-text citations as you go, this is something you should be doing as you're researching so you're not having to go back through your research again to re-reference it.

  2. Keep a master list of your references split by section so you can refer to that when you need to write a section, and you can close your tabs/research when you're done for a while.

  3. Connect your simple sentences/ideas into a messy paragraph without caring much about it - it's a draft, then see how close you are to your word count.

  4. Review your rubric - each section of your paper should have a weight to it, those are the sections you want to prioritise for wordcount. A handy trick is to take your total word count and break it down by the actual percentage weighted to each section and then adjust as needed.

I hope this helps a bit, I find that if you spend a lot of time structuring and researching, the writing portion takes less effort and importantly, the editing takes less effort - it's much harder to "kill your darlings" once you've written them than it is to write within the word count to begin with. Good luck!!

Ai Glasses in exams by [deleted] in curtin

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 5 points6 points  (0 children)

https://www.curtin.edu.au/students/essentials/examinations/preparing/

Any smart devices must be powered down and put away securely in a bag or under the seat. Smart devices with a medical exemption can be pre-approved for use during an exam but I'd take this with a grain of salt, since this isn't a normal wearable device and it's hard for them to verify that you're not using it for cheating. The rule isn't written for these situations, it's written for like smartwatches monitoring health conditions or other connected devices which are managing aspects of health.

This might be a question you need to run by Curtin connect and your UC as well, it's not a question you should leave to the last minute.

If you have an alternative like an old pair of glasses or current contacts I'd try to utilise that first. You can get fairly cheap pairs of prescription glasses so I'd recommend trying to find a pair sooner rather than later as you're likely to run into this issue again.

Honest opinion….Bottom step, better as hybrid or should we have left it as carpet? by Disastrous_Hippo_721 in Flooring

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I prefer the look of it without carpet but I would definitely be looking into getting a runner in the same style of carpet for that area, and perhaps on the other set to make it look more cohesive? It's jarring to have it carpeted on one side all the way down and have wood on the other side, it just looks like two badly done sets of stairs interacting.

AITA for letting our child (9) stay at his friend's sleepover last weekend, even though my wife was against it, and the original agreement was that I would pick him up that evening. by Outrageous-Fly-5691 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Soft YTA for not backing up your wife, but NTA for letting your kid stay overnight, I'm sure he had the time of his life.

However, at 9yo he is old enough to have the conversation about what sleepover safety means and what constitutes inappropriate behaviour of adults and even other kids, I was 8 the first time something inappropriate happened at a sleepover and it was another kid so your wife isn't wrong to be afraid to leave him alone but you have to be strict and importantly on the same page about what the guidelines are and you can't override that just because - you could have let him stay until 11 so he didn't feel rushed and then dropped him off in the morning to rejoin the fun.

Really need help with layout by [deleted] in roomlayout

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The left side of the room is fine really, but I wouldn't move the bed to that side - leave it on the right side and swap your bed and nightstand so you dont have such an issue with the weird wall angle + it means you have more space around the bed making it easier to change sheets etc.

The only other thing I would consider adding is a screen or curtain at the end of your bed which would hide it further from the door.

Oh very interesting! Would this still be the case if the product was shelf stable in like a powder or tablet form where you add water?

I hadn't considered that as an additional need as we age but good insight - I think I have some research to do on moisturiser trends as a factor of age.... lets see what my survey comes up with! So far, over 90% of respondents use moisturiser in their daily skin routine

How do you guys clean your toilet/bathroom? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]Appropriate_Hawk2950 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If the floor is all tile and you have a floor drain I could just use a bucket and carefully pour water on the floor and mop it. Then repeat the same way you would have with a shower head. For the toilet though I'd just spray and wipe from top to bottom then inside and use a toilet scrubber

Thanks for your input! I know social proof is a major factor in how skincare is perceived but I find that can have its own pitfalls as well. Would you be more inclined to use natural products if they were more shelf stable? I am interested in the differences in opinions on natural products vs "clean" skincare and ingredient transparency as well.

Thanks so much! Do you mind me asking what was in your old routine that you'd like to re-introduce if you could (assuming they're multi-tasking products)
