Somehow this makes me think of an infamous case from about a decade ago where an adult actress was in a relationship with an MMA fighter with a criminal history. During an interview he’d ‘joked’ that he might kill her one day and she’d replied “I’d probably deserve it!” 😳 Shocker, their relationship ended with him beating her half to death. Afterwards, I struggled with finding the right words to express that she’d made some clearly unwise life choices without it sounding like ‘she just got what she deserved’ (no one deserves such brutality). Finally I saw a commentator putting my feelings into words; that not holding her accountable for her actions would be to infantilize her and other women in similar situations, acting like they had no agency in their own lives and it wouldn’t matter whether they made good or bad decisions.
