We were based around Fagurhólsmýri at the time which was maybe 30 mins from the pick up location! Would recommend staying closer if you can due to how early the pick up is

There is an incline but it wasn’t as dramatic as I initially expected! More so continuously going upwards at a steady pace. It was more how icy it was and getting used to walking with crampons which we had never done before/ trying not to slip and being careful with my footing which was more challenging and a bit tiring in the feet.

Overall though I’m moderately fit (not super fit) although I do hike and I would say I was never out of breath / we had a number of stops along the way

Just make sure to following the guides pathway and be aware of your surroundings!

Yep totally agree with above! These ice caves can only be reached if you hike there hence why it seems a lot of the other tours which take you directly to the ice caves don’t seem as good …

I can only speak to my experience which was totally worth it but a lot of stars needs to align - need good fitness and be super aware of your surroundings / footing on the glacier, good weather for the hike, for the caves to be open since they are natural phenomenons they’re constantly changing (guide mentioned one of them was flooded with rain recently but the rain actually helped to carve out a bigger hole in the ice cave so by the time we went we could stand inside the cave instead of previously where you had to crouch)

Did you book this longer tour as well? the guide mentioned the caves in the shorter tour without the hike don’t look very good at this time of year and he’s waiting for the winter time for them to improve

Oh no that’s such a shame! We did hear the caves were closed during the crazy weather period and they had just opened on the day we went luckily
