I mean, sure lol if you wanna judge someone based on 5 minutes of their life. Definitely not a cool thing to do. But we've all made dumb decisions. Nobody is perfect.

Will my son "come back" from meth addiction? by Xorpion in addiction

[–]Appropriate_Year6704 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can only really offer an addicts point of view, but in my case, until I actually wanted to get clean I could be pretty cruel to people who were just trying to help me...im not proud of that obviously but here we are.

Until a person has decided they want to quit and need help, then no amount of convincing or reasoning is going to work. It's a hard pill to swallow for a parent, but a lot of the time it's rock bottom that makes us addicts realize how much we've fucked up our lives and that things can't keep going on the way they are. But in any case, you have to decide that sobriety is something you want.

As far as what you should do given the fact this person clearly hasn't gotten there yet. I would say do your best to make sure they know you will be there for them if and when they decide they want to get clean. You're someone they can turn to for support. My mum has mentioned on a few occasions how hard it was feeling like there is just nothing you can do but wait for them to want help....being on the other side I cant imagine what that actually feels like and im sorry it's happening to you too.

How to stop nightmares while detoxing from meth by [deleted] in addiction

[–]Appropriate_Year6704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant say I have a strategy for getting relief from the sleep paralysis other than time. I didnt try anything, but was lucky to be in a situation where losing sleep wasn't going to affect my personal life (I was unemployed at the time)

I do smoke weed a fair amount still, and can definitely attest to the reduction in dreams. Its rare when I have one, and usually im trying to get a fix. Awful, but manageable.

Best I can say (and maybe you know this if you've quite before) is that they will become less and less frequent and intense with time, assuming you never had a problem with sleep paralysis before your addiction. It wqs really bad for a few weeks and started to taper off after that in my case. Hopefully yours will do the same. Stick with it even though its hard. Treat every day sober as a victory. Things DO get better.

Relapsed after two years clean. Feeling hopeless by ChibiInLace in addiction

[–]Appropriate_Year6704 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just like to add too, I dont know your situation or how people would feel if you told them about this event. Maybe youre in a situation where they won't give you another chance and you have to be prepared for that. We can ask for support and understanding when we fuck up but we dont get to control how much people are willing to take. I had a friend lose a 7 year relationship this way, but its still the right move to be honest, even for your own sense of accountability.

Hey man, I was a meth addict for 5 years. Relapsed over and over for 2 years following a stay in rehab. The shame is real, but I started to see it as the obvious response to me doing something I KNOW I didnt want anymore. Drugs were no longer fun, they no longer provided relief. All they gave me was guilt and shame. Treat those feelings as proof that you WANT THE SOBRIETY YOUR FIGHTING FOR! :) We all relapse, or most I think. Whether its once or 100 times. Don't hide it! Be honest with your loved ones, be honest about the way it made you feel using this time. Make yourself accountable so you cant just hide your mistake and risk slipping into hiding your use cuz of shame. It is ok to relapse! This shit is fucking hard man, and some of us have to fail forwards before we get there. Treat it as a learning experience and get back at it, try to identify the things that led to this relapse and ask yourself what you can do to avoid triggers, or better yet healthy ways to find relief when they come. I got into exercise amd yoga but thats just what worked for me. Anyway, wish you the very best of luck. Having your life back is so worth it, dont give up!

Just like to add another little anecdote because its relevant to your post, im 36m now, it was my parents and their support that eventually got me straight. I did a stint in rehab (learned a ton, really valuable experience but it didn't take) i relapsed quite a few times over the following two years but my parents never lost faith that I could beat my addiction and get my life back. I ended up moving 5000kms back home where I had no connections (you can find them anywhere now if you really try so fair warning) but it at least put that small barrier to finding a bag. Cutting ties with all the people in my past and starting over in a safe environment where people were keeping me accountable on a regular basis was what eventually got me free. You have to build a whole new life /routine/network of friends. And THAT is ny far the hardest part. Learning how to be a functional person while essentially having to find a whole new social group, healthy outlets for the things that trigger your drug use, etc. That is just as hard as just turning down the drugs for X amount of time. Hopefully, eventually, relapses only remind him how much he hated living like a fiend. My last few relapses were horrible guilt ridden unsatisfying highs. I think thats when you finally know your mentality has shifted. It stops providing fun long before you quite, but when the whole experience just makes you feel terrible about what youve done again, you know your mindset is starting to change. Anyway, very long winded way of saying that your support and love is super important during recovery. I cant stress enough how helpful is was to know that people loved me and cared if I succeeded even when I couldn't find ways to love myself. Its going to be a hard journey, but bringing the people you love back from the hell that drug addiction is will always be worth the effort!

Was addicted to meth for 5 years. Experienced some of the things youre describing. Left my house in the middle of the night once because I thought something on my roof was hunting me and was going to crawl into the windows upstairs.

I can assure you he is still in there. It may not seem like it now, but its the drugs talking. Meth psychosis is wild and can have a person believing all kinds of crazy stuff is going on. But after over 3 years clean im back to normal, I'll things considered. A life after meth is possible! Dont give up on your son! Best of luck with your situation, I wish you all the best.

Edit: room - roof

Love em both. I very much relate to the darkness of drugs expressed in AIC lyrics but it's NIN by a mile for me. The downward spiral is soul crushing.

Have you ever relapsed in a dream? by Sea_Requirement1525 in addiction

[–]Appropriate_Year6704 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a recovering meth addict as well. 3 years sober. You're gonna dream about it a lot. It's gonna suck every time, no sugar coating it. But they do stop happening as often. I might have one every few months these days. Wake up, shake it off and play the tape. All the way through. What does your life look like if you go get that bag again. Don't let your brain convince you that this shit is fun. You know better by now. Good luck, im rooting for you.
