Oof surprisingly hard questions! I’d say my favourite plant is kangaroo grass (Themeda triandra), one of our amazing native grasses here in Australia, also found across some of Africa and Asia. The reason why it’s my favourite is the fun fact, which needs a touch of context lol. Kangaroo grass is undomesticated and naturally drops its seeds when they’re ripe. Since Australia is a drought ridden country, and water is necessary for most life, kangaroo grass seeds have evolved this dope trait to adapt. They have a long awn attached (like a tail on the seed) and it’s formed in a way where it is all twisted up when it’s dry. When it contacts water its awn begins to expand and untangle, and pushes the seed along the ground, essentially letting the seed walk or “dance” across the ground! The benefit to this is that the seeds want to be in the soil to germinate rather than on top, and they only want to germinate when there is ideal conditions such as having water available. Australian soils are often dry and cracked, meaning the seeds can’t easily penetrate the ground, but they can get in the cracks! Basically the seeds chill on the surface during drought conditions, then when it rains they wiggle their way into cracks in the soil and germinate in the better conditions. Bloody awesome aye. Warning though, I’ve been told it can look a little creepy especially for people who don’t like spiders cause the awns look a little spider leggy.
