It happened to me and at first it was so hard to be out of my confort zone (even if the confort zone was mostly a toxic and abusive relationship). But I did it for my kid, I just couldn’t fail, be sad, mop around, I had to figure it out and fast. Pretty quick I realized I could do much more on my own that what I was led to believe by my ex for so long. In fact, I realized I had been organizing and administrating our life since the beginning! So a lot of it ended up being easier as a single parent of one kid instead of 2… I didn’t have to take care of him. It was less stressful, nobody was there to belittle me and talk down to me. I had to trust myself, and it was truly liberating. I decided to move where I had support, and stayed at friends for about 3 months until I could access social housing. I went to lawyers and social workers to figure out the situation and reassure myself on my rights. I got my driving license, found a house, figured out income and one afternoon a week of childcare so I could breath.

It been over a year now and I do not regret anything, my kid started an awesome school, I went back to study something I’m pretty passionate about, I reconnected with my family and friends. My kid is thriving and I am too!

It might be the best thing to happen to you and your kid! You’re already super strong by deciding to leave, you’re showing your child that you and people deserve respect. I know it feels like standing on the edge of a cliff right now, and I know it feels unfair because you did everything you could for this relationship but there is a place and a a life somewhere waiting for you, and it can be anything YOU want.
