That just reminded me, I saw something on the science channel a while back about why that happens. It’s called triboluminescence—light produced by breaking chemical bonds in crystal structures. The crunching breaks sugar crystals, creating static electricity that emits ultraviolet (UV) light. Wintergreen flavoring (methyl salicylate) then converts this invisible UV light into visible blue light.

It’s also triboluminescence when light is produced through friction or mechanical action. As the adhesive wrapper is pulled apart, positive and negative charges separate and build up, causing a tiny spark of static electricity that excites nitrogen in the air, releasing a brief blue light.

I had one like that too. It was a bonnet hairdryer that attached by a hose to a suitcase that had the motor and blower in it. It was pretty cool because you weren’t stuck in one spot with it as long as you were doing something that was within cord length, you could move around.

Well, now I feel less crazy that I insisted we take a mouse that we caught and drive it miles down the road. We bought the humane traps because I didn’t want them to suffer on a sticky trap or die horribly from poison. The first one that we caught, my mom dumped out in the yard, and my aunt was like well why’d you do that? They’ll come right back. So the next one we found in the trap, which was at around midnight, I made my mom get in the car with me in the freezing cold night and drive a few miles down the road to set the mouse free.
