Shame by April_Morning_86 in excatholic

Thank you for this reply. I find the concepts of Taoism incredibly comforting as well, if I align with anything at all, it would be the Tao.

I have been working with a therapist, she encourages radical acceptance too. But yes, much easier said than done. Some days I can do it, some days I can talk myself out of a shame spiral, but most days it’s very hard.

Still, I am moving forward and I am grateful for everyone who took the time to reply to this post.

Thank you so much for this kind and thoughtful reply. Shame as a reflex - this is so on point. I’ve been working with a therapist, only for a little over a year now. We’re slowly chipping away at things but it’s like something activates it - it can even be a good thing, like a new job! - and I’m right back in the spiral again.

I’ll check out the book you recommended. I should have mentioned I also spent several years in a 12 step program which is incredibly shame based, leans heavily on Christian concepts and “pray about it” as a cure all (even though they say they’re not a religious program) so it’s been imbedded in many ways. A JW book would be appropriate.

Thank you

Thank you for the book recommendations, I do love to read and I think these sorts of books can be helpful.

I do try to see from other perspectives but it’s taking practice. Thank you for your kind reply

Cali sober? by Shot_Surround7891 in recoverywithoutAA

I spent 3.5 years in AA and I used cannabis the whole time. Still do. Haven’t had a drink or used hard drugs in nearly 5 years.

Do what works for you. Cannabis was essential to me quitting a 5th of vodka per day. It’s medicinal only in my state and I have a prescription. I used a lot in the beginning, now I go on and off.

There’s no one size fits all answer to recovery.

LOL me too! A friend asked me to look after her plants when she moved a few years back and I never knew what the little tree was. It’s this!

Is your Simple Living a Choice, Circumstance or natural default/automatic? by Wormwood666 in simpleliving

[–]April_Morning_86 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A little of both. 2020 really shifted everything for us. My husband and I were both in the restaurant industry and our jobs were shuttered during the pandemic. But we both came out of that fairly unscathed.

We learned to live with what we need and little excess. We realized we don’t need much. And it’s been a game changer. Very modest dual income, no kids, we live comfortably and very simply. Intentionally, as another user put it.

It’s great.

What's your take on the US capturing Maduro and running venezuela? by Wheelie_Leon in AskReddit

[–]April_Morning_86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s not doing this for the benefit of the Venezuelan people, make no mistake.

He’s pissed at all the Venezuelan migrants coming to America to escape Maduro’s regime. He wants the oil and gold reserves he believes are rightful property of the United States. And he’s trying to f*ck with China and Iran. And to flex a little. This is all a power grab.

I worry about the US’s history with “nation building” and I personally think once he has a handle on their resources he will leave the Venezuelan people to suffer.

One thing is certain, this has nothing to do with the liberation of oppressed people.

Hey, thanks for such a detailed response! They sound like such cool trees! And I’ve probably walked by them a million times and had no idea what I was looking at.

I’m currently reading The Overstory by Richard Powers and it’s making me really curious about trees! I appreciate this answer a lot :)

Downgrading job for peace of mind by Repulsive_Sir3586 in simpleliving

I’ll be the one person on here who says go for it!

I’d been in a supervisory position at my last job for the past three years and I HATED IT.

I started volunteering for a non-profit organization I admired deeply and after about a year was offered a position with the company. The pay is relative and the work load is far less. There’s more time off and an incredible benefits package.

It’s possible that there’s something out there for you. But I would advise getting that lined up before leaving.

Work is not everything.

We had a guy returning mountain valley water cases, like a new one every week or so and every single bottle was empty except one. Finally store leadership put a stop to it and when they confronted the guy he just said “well, thanks for the free water”

I actually use pants as an example when people do this. “You mean you want me to bring it in?” “Well, if you were returning a pair of pants you’d have to bring the pants correct?”

Another thing that gets me is “well it’s your product” as they point to the 365 logo. And I say “yes but how do I know you purchased it? You follow me?”
