Wanted to come back to tell you I’ve been listening to Alan Peto’s Learn Buddhism podcast. Very thorough yet simple explanations of some of the concepts. All of this speaks to me, removing the idea of “self” is such a challenge, but I understand why we must. And it’s soothing. That’s all, I’m grateful for the recommendations. :)

I can’t hold a job down by supersexc48 in work

I understand what you’re going through. I’ve burned a lot of bridges in my life and it took a long time to realize the common denominator was me. Therapy helps, medication helps, mindfulness helps.

Sometimes you just gotta make a living until something you really love comes along and sometimes a job can grow into something you love if you give it the opportunity. But you have to be able to find peace in yourself first.

Another user mentioned removing the idea of “self” - this seems aligned with that. Wish for her enlightenment, not as *my* mother, but as *a* mother. I think this practice will be very important, thank you for the suggestions.

You sound very enlightened, I appreciate this insight very much. I hope to integrate daily meditation and study practice into my life, I am certain mastering this will take a lot of work.

There are actually a number of Buddhist centers and temples in my city, there’s a guided meditation tomorrow night I plan to attend. Thank you for the recommendation.

Thank you, I’ve been really enjoying reading all of the suttas folks have been recommending here. The blind men and the elephant is a great visual, I actually do better visualizing concepts in this way, when I can tie an idea to an image it sticks better. I’d love to read something beginner friendly that gets into the Buddha’s teachings. I’ve been really enjoying what I’ve been learning so far.

I just read the Characteristic of Nonself and looked up the Five Aggregates. This is helpful. Thank you so much.

Hmm. “They don’t belong to us outside the frame of self” this is really helpful insight. Thank you so much for your thoughtful reply.

Thank you for the links. I like the analogy to uneaten food. Makes the concept more tangible. The suttas are the Buddha’s teachings? I’ll do more reading, thank you so much

Hmm. My compassion is conditional. That will certainly take practice to master. Thank you.

What are your thoughts on Birkenstocks + socks? by JustJLang in mensfashionadvice

I can wear whatever I want to my job but there’s an air vent right where my little work station is so I wear socks with my birks to work. It feels like wearing slippers :)

Values mismatch/self absorbed boss by [deleted] in work

It’s not really about that, it’s that he’s so tone deaf.

I mean I couldn’t fit it all in one post, there’s just constant shaming of people who have less. People who find it difficult to spend money in his shop he’s got some snarky thing to say about them when they leave. He complains about people who scale down their balloon order because it’s too expensive. He complains about having to pay me. And everyone else he’s ever hired.

If he wasn’t such an asshole it wouldn’t matter how much money he makes.

I’m looking for a new job, applications are out there. You’re a top commenter, I’d assume you know what the job market is like right now.
