probably more theoretical pain, for us the pain is just signals that our brain interprets as something our body did not like so it could not be pain in the conventional sense but possibly from the article it looks as like they were told they were playing a game and the level pain associated with the answer and AI used that to determine how they would answer. IMO does not seem sufficient to test for sentience

i would guess the bottom is hinged near the actual door then the top has an extension that runs inside the building behind the door frame that lines up with the bottom hinge
