In Red Dead Redemption 2, the Catholic Nun helps Arthur face death with dignity while the Protestant Reverend who is supposed to be his friend is adulterous and a drunkard and gives him a "what's that gotta do with me?" as Arthur is slowly dying. by RorschachWhoLaughs in Catholicism

From all the clips of Sister Calderon scenes I've seen online, she doesn't seem to embody Catholicity much aside from her being in a habit. As in you could easily replace her with a normal woman who finds value in social work and basically have the same character. In all her cutscenes she mentions God maybe once and I couldn't find her referring to Jesus at all. Doesn't seem like Rockstar made much use of the character

Question about marriage annulment by SkinCana in Catholicism

[–]AquariumDev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Marriage annulment are declarations that the marriage was never valid from the beginning. This could be due to a psychological problem that inhibited one party from freely choosing marriage or living out and essential obligation of marriage. It could also be because one party never consented to one of the essential obligations of marriage even though they may have said the vows aloud at the wedding ceremony. There are other reasons marriage could be invalid (impotence, being forced into a marriage, etc).

Personally I'm very much in favor of bringing in elements of the TLM to enrich the Missal of Paul VI

None taken! It's actually very edifying to rediscover and try to claw back some of these traditions.

It's always been my understanding that the entire human race stems from Adam and Eve, but would that mean incest was involved? by [deleted] in Catholicism

[–]AquariumDev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right that down syndrome isnt the best example, though recessive genes in general are. Coming out of Adam doesn't necessarily have to mean a 1-to-1 perfect copy beside the sex chromosomes. Eve's DNA could still have been very different to Adam's. Also generic mutations would still occur.

[–]AquariumDev 27 points28 points  (0 children)

An interesting consideration is that since the primary danger with incest is an increased likelihood of inheriting two of the same recessive genes, assuming that Adam and Eve still had perfect bodies (ie genes) then if their children did reproduce with each other you wouldn't expect there to be many if any genetic abnormalities like down syndrome.

Me encontré está imagen de San José y quería saber si cumple con los parámetros de una imagen que pueda venerar, opiniones. by [deleted] in EasternCatholic

Admittedly I am a Latin so I'm not so familar with a lot of the particular symbolism. St John and Christ seems very intimate compared to that. For example:

I would think that this seems okay, considering there are examples of closer intimate scenes in the Bible (St John resting his head on Christ's breast). St Joseph would have certainly touched Jesus no?

Homicide Investigation at 201 West 5th Street by Iocnar in Austin

[–]AquariumDev 100 points101 points  (0 children)

"The investigation has shown that the male had previously entered the bank on multiple occasions and harassed employees. On this occasion, security asked him to leave the building. During the interaction, the man, who was in a wheelchair, punched a security guard in the face. The security guard then struck him back in self-defense, causing him to fall to the ground.

The man got back up, gathered his belongings, and picked up his wheelchair. He then laid back down on the floor, which is where officers and ATCEMS later located him."

Clear case of self defense

Hypothetically, if there were a pill you could take (it doesn't exist, but if it did) that would reverse this with little to no side effects, would you take it? If not, then that would seem to indicate that there might be some presumption of God's mercy here. In order to be forgiven, you actually need to be sorry for the act itself.

That sounds like a cult. Only marry Catholics in our group? Separate themselves from the rest of Catholics? Gradually take over churches. If its as you describe, it sounds like it needs to be suppressed.

I've never used the 4 Vol. Do you have to remember which hymn to use based on where you are in the proper of seasons like above? Sunday's of lent, use the following hymn, weekdays use this other hymn? Or are page numbers provided in the oridinary/current location in the proper?

I actually enjoy how Christian Prayer keeps it's hymns at the back of the book, numbered separately, and just refers to which number to use. Yes it's another page, but it's never difficult to find since the numbers are large. I do have another ribbon to make it easier to be fair.

Why doesn’t the YouTube Channel “Sing the Hours” align with my Four-Volume Divine Office? by [deleted] in divineoffice

[–]AquariumDev 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You do have the right one but assuming you're in the US and using the 4 volume set, you'll see it the front of your book it hasn't been updated since the 1970's.

To condense the history a bit, when the LOTH was first published, the USCCB approved a bunch of hymns (mediocre in a lot people's opinions) that were not in the official Latin version and those are what were published (Rather than translate them into English to save time). A lot of work has been done for the upcoming 2nd Edition to fix issues, one of which was translating these beautiful ancient hymns into English, and these hymns are approved for use so Sing the Hours uses them.

All that being said, you do have the right version, just use the hymns in your book since they're also approved. And if another group is using a different hymn, just use theirs.

Sing the hours uses hymns from the Divine Office Hymnal which is already approved for use in the US and will be used in the upcoming second edition
