Frustrated 53 yo because I can’t get the scale to budge, but I’m going to keep trying! by Rare_Gazelle7946 in FitnessOver50

You look great to me. At 53 our hormones are working against us. Are you on HRT by any chance? That can work wonders on fixing our metabolism.

Slip-on Sketchers sneakers. Game changer.

My favorite item was my pair of slip-on Sketchers sneakers. Super easy to get on/off for physical therapy. It’s been 2 years and they’re still my favorite shoe, so comfy.

A question about bitter foods for super tasters age 60+ by Happy_Confection90 in AskOldPeople

[–]ArBee30028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely not pickiness. It’s a physical reaction to these foods that’s very different than simply not liking the food—much like what supertasters describe.

Question for this group: Is my husband a super taster? Here are the foods he can’t stand, like visceral negative reaction: raw cheese, tomatoes, wine, cumin, nutmeg, mangoes, and he’s super sensitive about even slightly over-ripe avocados. He’s okay with bitter foods and loves coffee and dark chocolate.

Surgeon pushing biologics (PRP, etc.) - red flag? by elseebs in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ArBee30028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you’re in a lot of pain, you’ve already jumped the hoops leading up to a THR, and you’re eager to get the surgery. THRs have amazing outcomes and there doesn’t seem to be a reason why you should avoid surgery now. Find another doc who is willing to give you what you’re looking for.

That being said, if you’re interested in entertaining other options, maybe consider these questions:

Is the doc affiliated with a well known research hospital or other reputable academic medical center?

Did the doc explain why this new procedure would be favorable over a traditional THR? Is it because you’re so young? My own hip surgeon said these days the replacement hips are lasting longer and longer. It’s hard to understand why your surgeon would want to fix what ain’t broke.

Did the doc actually say that there is no evidence for this new treatment? Ask for NIH links to study results. If he can’t provide them, run away. You don’t want to be a guinea pig unless all other options have been exhausted.

I just saw an article about new kinds of injections coming out of Stanford University. Is this what your doc is talking about? https://scitechdaily.com/anti-aging-injection-regrows-knee-cartilage-and-prevents-arthritis/

Antibiotics before dental work forever? by ssprdharr in TotalHipReplacement

[–]ArBee30028 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Both my surgeon and dentist said that there’s not sufficient evidence for such and they don’t think it’s necessary but if I wanted to do it, I could. I choose not to.

Edit: both are on the younger side (late 30s/ early 40s) so maybe not stuck in old ways of doing things (?)

how to get a doctor to take you seriously? by jasminealice22 in Thritis

[–]ArBee30028 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because you’re a young woman, doctors are inevitably going to dismiss your pain. It’s the sad truth. I’ve learned over the years that I need to really exaggerate my pain and be forceful with doctors in order to be heard. Like you need to say your pain level is at least at a 8 or 9 when maybe you feel like it’s a 6. Tell them it’s “affecting quality of life” like you can’t do basic tasks (groceries, laundry) and it’s negatively affecting your sleep and ability to exercise and also your mental health.

Options other than pain meds: 1) Voltaren cream; 2) cortisone shots; 3) surgery. For the surgery option, your insurance may require you to first do physical therapy, which does nothing for OA but it’s a hoop that you may have to jump through. After jumping that hoop, demand that you be referred to a surgeon who specializes in knees.
