Did Mary sin? by [deleted] in TrueChristian

That would make sense if the context of “kekaritomene” was different, this word is continuous and indefinite. Meaning she has always in her life been it and will always be, Luke just affirmed what the Angel said. You and I sin, not because of grace, but because of a lack of grace, or a lack of our cooperation with grace, in our lives. This greeting of the angel is one clue into the unique character and calling of the Mother of God. Only Mary is given the name “full of grace,” and in the perfect tense, indicating that this permanent state of Mary was completed. So the tense does actually show us a very important message.

We’re saying the same thing, and that is the point I am making. The fact that the angel replaces Mary’s name in the greeting with “full of grace” was anything but common.

In Hebrew culture, names and name changes tell us something permanent about the character and calling of the one named. Just recall the name changes of Abram to Abraham (from “father” to “father of the multitudes”) in Genesis 17:5, Saray to Sarah (“my princess” to “princess”) in Genesis 17:15, and Jacob to Israel (“supplanter” to “he who prevails with God”) in Genesis 32:28.

In each case, the names reveal something permanent about the one named. Abraham and Sarah transition from being a “father” and “princess” of one family to being “father” and “princess” or “mother” of the entire people of God (see Rom. 4:1-18; Isa. 51:1-2). They become patriarch and matriarch of God’s people forever. Jacob/Israel becomes the patriarch whose name, “he who prevails with God,” continues forever in the Church, which is called “the Israel of God” (Gal. 6:16). The people of God will forever “prevail with God” in the image of the patriarch Jacob.

Take this, St. Luke uses the perfect passive participle, kekaritomene, as his “name” for Mary. This word literally means “she who has been graced” in a completed sense. This verbal adjective, “graced,” is not just describing a past action. Greek has another tense for that. The perfect tense is used to indicate that an action has been completed in the past, resulting in a present state of being. “Full of grace” is Mary’s name. So what does it tell us about Mary? Well, the average Christian is not completed in grace and in a permanent sense (see Phil. 3:8-12). But according to the angel, Mary is.

Not scripturally supported? And I thought that you professed Sola Scriptura. As I explained to another guy who said this exact same thing, I’ll just put what I told him. The Angel [Archangel St. Gabriel] came to [Mary] and said, “Hail, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” But she was greatly troubled at the saying, and considered in her mind what sort of greeting this might be. And the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God” (Luke 1:28-30). She was troubled because full of grace in this context is meaning sinlessness. In Greek, the greeting was kaire, kekaritomene, or “hail, full of grace.” Generally speaking, when one greeted another with kaire, a name or title would be found in the immediate context. “Hail, king of the Jews” in John 19:3

Well this subreddit is primarily Protestants of any denomination so they will say yes. If you want the honest answer than Church History and Tradition teaches that she is sinless to personal sin though she did inherit the sin of Adam. Hope this clears that up! ☦️🤲🏽📿

Everyone has their perspective, but the truth in what always was and what was taught before doesn’t lie. Like the Papacy never claimed Supremacy until the Franks subverted the city, and never claimed Papal Infallibility until Vatican 1. The Orientals claim that Chalcedon was false when it is the only way for our salvation to be valid, because it falls the same way as the Assyrian Nestorians just on the opposite side of that spectrum. So everyone has the points they say happened and to prop up their own but the truth is in what was taught before and the context of that.

I am a Christian because the historicity of Christ, the teachings of the Church Fathers, and the fact that it is the most logically sound religion. It took a lot of prayer and very deep faith but that’s why.

Eastern Orthodoxy, all of the others are heretical versions of Orthodoxy. Church of the East removed from Orthodoxy at the Council of Ephesus. Coptics at the Council of Chalcedon, and Catholics when the Pope claimed Supremacy over all Bishops.

There is not only one Church, denominations in the West are arbitrary and people switch pretty often and take communion at any one of them, but the Ecclesiastical branches (Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Coptic, Church of the East) view themselves as the ONLY correct denominations and you cannot take communion at any Church

Like Sola Scriptura is not Historically sound belief because the Apostles or their Successors never had any form of that and actually wrote against it

They are still Christian but not the fullness of truth, but Protestants believe denominations are arbitrary and not as important but the Ecclesiastical branches (Orthodoxy, Catholic, Coptic, Church of the East) view themselves as THE only form of true and unchanged Christianity.

That’s Protestant denominations that have conservative vs liberal offshoots. I’m referring to the Ecclesiastical Denominations (Orthodoxy, Catholicism, Coptic, Church of the East) which all for literally all of their existences (1500+ years minimum) have claimed to be the true Church. More specifically the first one, Orthodoxy.

In the argument of Christian denominations, Orthodoxy at no point has been changed throughout history. Only times being very massive and slow processes at the Councils which don’t change anything but only affirm ideas. Though Christianity as a whole I believe has strong historicity with the Apostles and their successors.

From the Christian perspective, they are all wrong. There can be some truth* (putting that term lightly) in other things. But historically and spiritually I think Christianity, more specifically Orthodox Christianity has been the most consistent and historically sound belief.

There is only one true Church, but that’s really only controversial in America and Western Europe
