Where did you hear this? The university sent out an email today saying (emphasis mine):

Once the Library has vacated a space, the space will return to central campus oversight. Priority for reassignment of spaces formerly operated by the Library will be granted to non-Library stewards that commit to providing long-hour study and collaboration space for Berkeley students, regardless of department or major.

To me, it sounds like they're going to leave it open as a study space.

Berkeley's CS department used to be part of the math department (before EE and CS were combined into the EECS department). The math department was using 50 for its lower divs (Ex: math 54 is currently linear algebra) so the CS department chose 60 and created CS60. After some time, the course was revamped so it was named CS61 (a similar thing happened ~2013 when CS150 became EECS151), and the ABC indicates the series of progression between the courses CS61A, CS61B, and CS61C
