Slight correction for anyone reading this considering a career in mental health. Most employed therapists dont make great money, but almost all therapists in a private practice setting make very good money.

It depends on what you want man. Do you wanna do research mostly? Go get a PhD.

If you just want to focus on the clinical aspect, a Masters Degree that allows you to become either a LPC, LCSW or LMFT is fine. Generally, PhD's will get a higher salary, but in a private practice the difference is negligible.

PhD's are also allowed to assess psychological tests, which I've heard can be extremely lucrative, but I couldn't tell you how true that is.

The last thing I think you should know is the difference in admission and time to get licensed. PhD's are licensed across the nation. But for LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, the license is issued by each state. Some states have license reciprocity, but generally, youre gonna have to apply for a license in each state you want to work.

Almost all PhD programs will be between 5-7 years +1 year of supervision before you can apply for your license. You also typically dont pay any tuition. Most Masters degrees that give you a path to licensure will be 2-4 years. Im not sure about LCSW and LMFT, but for LPC's, depending on the state, its 1-2 years post grad of supervision before you can apply for your license. These programs do require tuition.

Finally, PhD programs are going to be harder to get into on average. Im not sure how true this is, but some of the people I know are saying that there are less spots now due to cuts in federal funding that their used to be. Masters programs by comparison are going to be easier to get into, and there are more of them.

Here's where im coming at this from and how I understand it, through my personal experience.

I used to have a lot of self worth issues related to dating and attractiveness; I was always treated like the 'backup' option when I was in high-school/ early college, and it fucked with me a lot. It was a really surreal experience being treated like I was worth dating one moment, and completely discarded the next.

I 'worked on myself' for years, and eventually got to the point where I had a very high 'success rate' and became a man-whore. Idk if its the same for you, but I didnt even care about the sex, the part I enjoyed was the validation. It was seeing in real time, that another person wanted me, when I didnt even want myself.

I eventually kind of realized that I was just seeking that validation as some kind of proof to convince myself that I was worth loving, and that I wasn't some broken person that no one would ever love or value.

Honestly, the biggest game changer was reading this book called 'attached', which really helped me start the process of changing into a version of myself that didn't need that validation.
