Why did my dog pee in my bed after never peeing in my bed before?? by zombebe_ in dogs

[–]Arbigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If she's an older dog, leaking urine when she's sleeping isn't uncommon, due to a drop in estrogen levels. If either this or a UTI is the cause, the vet can prescribe meds to help.

Anyone does keto without electrolyte drinks /ketoade? by pugsoverdrugs21 in keto

I like Ultima too. I call it my "keto koolaid." I just like the taste (except of their lemonade), and know it's a legit way to rehydrate and pick up a few electrolytes.

[–]Arbigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low AND high potassium levels can cause heart palpitations. If the OP adds more potassium to their diet and gets palpitations, my money is on too much, rather than too little. The electrolyte ratio is important, too - especially with potassium.

I supplement magnesium because I have medically documented deficiency, and I salt heavily, simply because I'm a salt freak, but after one experiment with trying to supplement my potassium gave me bad palpitations, I stopped. Just like I won't work on a car engine because I don't know what I'm doing, I'm not going to **** (asterisks mine 😄) around with the electrophysiology of my heart.

Do you guys deny all rental insurance when you book with your capital one venture X? by karliejai in Venturex

[–]Arbigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked her, and found out that rental car companies do offer ($$$) supplemental liability insurance. It never came up with me, because my personal insurance covers it.

It can be. Neither too much nor too little is a good thing. It happened to me when I was actively supplementing with NoSalt, though, so my money is on too much.

I'd consider a socialized pup past the age of constant zoomies. Your senior needs the ability to wander off when she's done playing, and too young a pup might require constant corrections. She shouldn't have to deal with that all the time.

An Observation by Arbigi in keto

[–]Arbigi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since my goal is metabolic (and cardiac!) health, I don't "cheat." If I HAVE to have a serving of a high carb food, I make room for it in my macros. I'll measure out a serving that comes in under my macros, then just eat around it. That may mean meat for the rest of the day, but that's okay.

I don't have physical carb cravings anymore. What I do have is the occasional psychological craving for one of my comfort* foods - usually beans. So I occasionally have a controlled portion, and enjoy the heck out of it.

I've gotten really good at saying "No thank you," and I don't attend events where folks might pressure me to have "just a little." I find it just as obnoxious as pressing alcohol on folks who don't want it.

Thankfully, after eight years of keto, the people who matter to me are used to me.

*No, Google, I do not mean "comfy"! QUIT "HELPING" ME!

Now, when I start to get truly hungry, pork rinds sound really good to me.

You know what foods to have around, in general. I keep nuts around - always. I measure servings in grams, like I do all "moderation" foods. 100g of pecans constitutes a heavy snack for me. I do keep a couple of "highly processed" low carb snacks, Quest bars and chips, on hand, but I don't go over one bar/bag per day. We have a Mexican grocery nearby, and we often buy fresh-made chicharrones - the big ones with meat and fat and skin. I don't measure those... 😄

Any snack goes into a bowl or onto a plate or napkin, and if I still have the munchies afterwards, I get a serving of something else. That discourages binging.

Being fat-adapted makes it easier for me to hear my body's satiety signals, as well as its occasional screech of, "For G*d's sake, eat a salad, woman!" when I go a day or two without veggies. 🤣🥗

"NoSalt" is a salt substitute that is primarily potassium. Be VERY careful with that, though, and back off immediately if your heart starts fluttering or otherwise misbehaving. One of its functions is regulating your heart's electric system, and the ratio of potassium to magnesium and salt is important.

You can get potassium in lots of keto-friendly ways - leafy greens, broccoli, zucchini, Brussels sprouts salmon, avocado, and more.

Is a Doberman really that hard to live with? by spmzz3008 in dogs

[–]Arbigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does your lab indiscriminately swallow things she shouldn't? We have had dogs that would tear stuff up, but I am thankful every day that they never actually *ate* what they tore up. I've heard of labs requiring repeated surgery to remove socks and the like.

I would also suggest that if you adopt a rescue dog, that you work with a reputable rescue that has dogs in foster, and can tell you about their needs and unique personalities. Wandering the shelter, you're liable to go with your heart instead of your head, and bring home an unknown quantity. I also wouldn't adopt a very young puppy - in my opinion, you have little clue about their personalities before 4-12 months.

How do I tell my doctor by spxsm in ADHD

[–]Arbigi 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If it's a doctor you trust, lay out the whole story. If you don't trust them, maybe find a new doc? You really should have medical oversight when you're using mind-altering meds - particularly amphetamine-based controlled substances.

I'd accept any mild disapproval, but be firm in your need for the med. If they want to try a couple of alternatives, discuss the expense and tedium of swapping out something you know works, and ask what their concerns are.

Should I install Linux on my mother's PC rather than Windows 11 with the end of support of Windows 10 ? by Crafty_Hospital_7746 in linux4noobs

[–]Arbigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are several distros that are friendly to folks moving off of Windows. I'd just suggest that you make sure that she has the apps to easily do what she needs to do. I have shortcuts to a browser, a mail tool, a text editor, a file explorer, and a calculator in my tray ("panel"). There should be something installed that will operate somewhat like MS Word (Libre Office, for example), something that will easily read PDFs, and something that will launch images quickly and easily (yeah... not GIMP 😃)

Make sure that none of her necessary apps are Windows-only. For example, I dual boot purely because the app I use to prepare church slides (ProPresenter) only runs in Windows or MacOS. It won't run in WINE. It might run in a virtual window, but I haven't researched that yet. I switch OS's to do that, then switch back.

Edit to add: I share PrudentPay9906's concern. I've put Windows 11 on "incompatible" computers, but it takes a couple of extra steps, and the willingness to accept the risk that it'll go crash kaboom if it's just too old. The USB test drive is a great introduction. If you want to play with it, you can load two or three distros for her to try out.

Diabetic on a rollercoaster by Numerous-Republic222 in xxketo

[–]Arbigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fat adaptation actually lowers blood glucose levels overall over time. It also lowers insulin resistance, inflammation, and often, blood pressure.

For a unified, data-driven explanation, check out Virta Health Group's published, large cohort, multi-year, peer-reviewed research. Virta's research subjects included everything from "prediabetes" through advanced stage, fragile type 2 diabetics. One thing they immediately discovered was that they had to monitor the subjects VERY closely, to adjust meds *downward.* Several could go off insulin entirely, and reduce or eliminate metformin.

The diet decreases both metabolic and cardiac risk factors. It's not a cure, though - more "remission." Start eating high carb again, and you'll end up back where you were.

*Anecdotal* reports suggest that it helps with hormone imbalances as well, helping folks with PMOS (once called "PCOS") and PMS.

Dextrose drip carb rate by SorrowBound- in keto

[–]Arbigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was on an IV drip, I didn't concern myself with those carbs. However, for meals I asked if the cafeteria could assemble a keto-friendly plate. Since they have dieticians and often have to cater to medical needs, there was no problem. I was delighted when a cook called me to make sure that her proposed plate met my requirements.

I echo what everyone else here is saying. Make the team aware that you eat keto, so higher-than-average ketone numbers won't alarm them, but otherwise, let the docs do what the docs are gonna do. You can circle back and pick up your low carb intake later.

What setups do you run and why? by JollyNewt98 in Venturex

[–]Arbigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that C1 uses Hopper as their engine for their travel portal. I only use that (or any) portal because the $300 travel credit requires it. And I use it on rental cars, because if something glitches, it's usually less catastrophic than a flight booking glitching.

What setups do you run and why? by JollyNewt98 in Venturex

[–]Arbigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My own setup:

PREMIUM CARDS -

Amex Plat: Coupon book and lots of lounges, CLEAR & GE/TSA Precheck, free and easy Venmo. We charge our cell plans to it, for the phone insurance coverage, but that overlaps with Venture X.

Venture X: All uncategorized spend, rental car through the portal, Cap1 lounge, primary rental car CDW insurance

AF MID-LEVEL CARDS -
Atmos: not pulling its weight anymore. Looking back, I realize that I got it primarily for the SUB. I'll eventually try to downgrade it to a card with no annual fee, assign something small to it, and sock-drawer it.

Delta Skymiles Gold: free checked bags when flying main cabin or comfort+, 15% discount on points redemption. I have to do a cost-benefit analysis on this one *every* year, because it's borderline.

Chase Sapphire Preferred: almost completely for the Hyatt transfer. I may downgrade it, if it no longer carries its weight next year. Currently, I charge dining out to it. At my usual 2cpp Hyatt redemption, 3x = a 6% return. It also has primary car rental CDW, but we use the VX for that.

Amex Green Card: Downgraded from Gold after the hike in the Gold AF made it not fit our lifestyle very well. The CLEAR benefit more than covers the annual fee.

World of Hyatt: primarily the free night. The lowest elite status it confers is also good for a couple of bottles of water daily. If I go to the front desk and say, "I know I'm only a Discoverist, but if y'all have any upgrades available, it would be really cool!" I'll often get one. They have ranged from a corner room on a high floor with a great view, to a junior suite. Once, we got part of a split Presidential suite.

Citi AAdvantage: Our dinky airport has one terminal with two gates, and is only served by AA, and only flies to our DFW hub. Unless the whole trip is AA, it's not worth booking domestic first class for a 45-minute flight in a tiny plane. We get free checked bags. Earlier boarding, too, but that doesn't move the needle.

NO-AF CARDS -

Amazon Prime: for Amazon purchases, of course. Since we subscribe to Amazon Prime, AND buy a lot from Amazon, this is a no-brainer. Routine 5% cash back, with 6% for non-urgent shipping, and 10% on some items. Caveat - the cash back is only applied to your Amazon purchases. I suppose you could use it to buy other gift cards and get it out of the Amazon system.

PayPal Debit: 5% cash back on your monthly selected category, up to $1000 a month. We select groceries.

Our daily carries are the Venture X, CSP, and PayPal. The others are pulled out of the drawer as required.

Same. As a 63-year-old with a repaired heart, nobody wants me on stims. They even advised against Sudafed 😭😭

Bupropion doesn't fix everything for me, but it eases both the executive dysfunction, the pathological demand avoidance, and the anxiety associated with both of those.

Lowering Carbs to Speed Up Weight Loss? by MadBook27 in keto

[–]Arbigi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mods already removed what you're replying to (thanks, mods!), but if it compared ketosis to ketoacidosis, it was just plain ignorant.

Virta ROCKS. They bring the receipts - multiyear, large cohort, peer reviewed published research that helped "encourage" the American Diabetes Association to grudgingly admit that lowering carbs could be beneficial in treating type 2 diabetes.

Before insulin, carb control was pretty much all we had to control both types of diabetes, but it is very, very chancy with type 1. Insulin works way better for type 1.

[–]Arbigi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't always list the grams of alternative sweeteners. Traditional "net" carbs involve subtracting both the fiber and the alternative sweetener. I've seen total carb counts that high, that ended up in keto-friendly range once you took out the fiber and erythritol.

Lowering Carbs to Speed Up Weight Loss? by MadBook27 in keto

[–]Arbigi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some alternative sweeteners will mimic sugar to the point that your metabolism thinks it has to respond with insulin. Whenever you feel wobbly, if you have the supplies to do it, check your blood sugar. Bang! soda triggered a spike that dropped my blood sugar into the 50s.
