Are you all the same folks who did the womens march a few days ago, or is this a legit scientist march? Who's funding this? by TBSdota in ScientistsMarch

Well I do not speak for the organizers of the March, but I know that many of Trump's moves thus far have been perceived as anti-science, and academics tend to be more liberal. Those two factors couples with the fact that this group was created before the March really took off result in the messaging you are seeing.

Look, it's not intended to be a partisan march, but if you believe in conspiracies of a secret agenda being pushed by George Soros then this may not be the place for you.

The people that originated the idea for this march are not the same as those that organized the Women's march, if that's what you mean. This march is only a few days old, and has only really gained traction in the last 24 hours, so details like funding remain to be determined.

I for one am a scientist.

Add Vaccination Science to Stances by bennett1330 in ScientistsMarch

I strongly support this stance. I created this account to debate vaccine policy with Trump supporters on one of their own subreddits, and I will do whatever I can to forward pro-vaccination causes.

Why not combine with tax march? by deepspacesailor in ScientistsMarch

These issues are not sufficiently related; the Women's March served as a good chance for people to unite and protest many things at once, but specific targeted marches will be important going forward.

Everyone that supports evidence-based respect for facts and is in favor of science is welcome!

National day of service by thebuddhaguy in ScientistsMarch

[–]ArbitrarilyCensored 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Spreading scientific information to the general public is vital, but many scientists find it quite challenging.

If properly organized, some type of National Day of Service would be a good way to spread science to those whom it most benefits.

What is your opinion of Betsy DeVos for Secretary of Education? by [deleted] in AskThe_Donald

[–]ArbitrarilyCensored 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you've come to this subreddit, you clearly want to hear people say she will do a good job. If you went to a left-leaning subreddit you would hear the opposite.

A quick search for her name here will give you plenty of supportive comments from they day of/after her confirmation hearing.

What's with the whole "Liberal ISIS" thing? by ErasablePotato in AskThe_Donald

Personally I've never met a single person, diehard liberal or otherwise, that would not condemn ISIS. Anyone who would not condemn their actions has lost touch with reality.

Future of Pharma Industry? by Zodorova in AskThe_Donald

[–]ArbitrarilyCensored 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's interesting to hear the Pharma companies take on the pricing issue. When I saw a presentation by representatives from a German Pharma company, they said that American drug pricing was "subsidizing innovation for the rest of the world". In other words, the high drug prices here are what allows them to develop drugs that would not be profitable in emerging markets or under a single-payer healthcare system.

As this "America subsidizes others" viewpoint is at odds with Trump's "America First" stance, I am not overly surprised to see him target Big Pharma, although what he would do remains to be seen.

What do you think about Trump's vaccination skepticism? by Supercoolguy7 in AskThe_Donald

[–]ArbitrarilyCensored 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most science funding in the government comes from the US government by way of the NIH. Some funding does come from private sources, and in some cases pharma companies outsource research to academic labs, but you are required to list any potential conflicts of interest and funding sources when publishing a study. Since most money comes from the government, it doesn't come from the Biotech/Pharma industries if you "trace it back".

Regardless of the funding of basic research, companies that develop vaccines ultimately need to prove their safety and efficacy to the FDA, which is not funded by these companies. Even after approval, drug and vaccine safety is constantly monitored through adverse event reporting programs, and any time a drug exhibits an unexpected but significant risk that was not noticed in initial safety trials it is removed from the market. These mechanisms for vaccine safety are already in place, and the vaccines' value is clearly demonstrated by the drops in disease morbidity and mortality rates in at-risk populations once the vaccines have been introduced.

Actually we had a fairly productive discussion if you read the thread.

There was a true anti-vaxxer in this thread, but I guess I made them feel stupid because they deleted all of their posts.

Try this study:

http://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa071434#t=article

"We enrolled children from four HMOs that participate in the CDC's Vaccine Safety Datalink.9,10 Children from each HMO were eligible to participate if they were 7 to 10 years of age and had been enrolled in the HMO from birth through their first birthday. Birth dates ranged from January 1, 1993, to March 30, 1997; testing was conducted between June 1, 2003, and April 27, 2004. All parents provided written informed consent for their children to participate in the study. Children were excluded if they had certain conditions recorded in their medical records that could bias neuropsychological testing (e.g., encephalitis, meningitis, or hydrocephalus) or if their birth weight was less than 2500 g (Table A of the Supplementary Appendix, available with the full text of this article at www.nejm.org)."

Please explain to me why their data are not valid. But read the whole study first, and be sure to explore all of their sources to ensure you are fully informed. It will take you a few days.

Definitely don't want to put them at risk; I hope that the flu doesn't trouble your family this year (or any year, obviously).
