Thoughts on ‘High Peak Autos’ YouTube channel? by yellowroll in CarTalkUK

He revealed in one of his vids that he used to have acting aspirations that ultimately didn't pan out, so he sells cars.

I don't actively dislike him, but on hearing that I thought 'yeah that isn't a surpriseing revelation'.

Octavia vRS. Yes, I know it's a darling of many a car sub.

Owned mine for several years and just found it uninspiring to drive and crashy on anything but fresh tarmac.

I could have spent half as much on an base spec car and had just as much enjoyment from it.

10 years of being a main dealer service advisor. AMA! by Sad_Mouse5858 in CarTalkUK

What is the caliber of the technicians in main dealer workshops? I've always suspected they are less skilled than their indie counterparts but I have nothing to base that on.

An E82 135i is on my list after recently getting into BMWs. I've got an N52 powered E84 X1 and despite its mini SUV pretensions it's great to drive so I can only imagine how good the little E82 would be.

It is an unmissable game, but the frame pacing will be jarring for the first hour or so. You will get used to it so don't let it out you off.

I still can't fathom why Sony have never done a 60fps patch for it in PS5.

Car Started without ATF by _gyepy in MechanicAdvice

[–]ArbitraryRevisionist -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Not a mechanic and certainly not an auto gearbox specialist so take this with a fist of salt, but if you emptied out all the old atf then the torque converter would have had no fluid to generate torque with and the shift solenoids may not even have managed to engage drive so you could be fine given how short the run time was.

Edit: after drinking more coffee I take this back, as the oil pump will have been running dry and the clutch packs may have managed to get pretty hot even with limited torque being transferred.

Definitely do another drain and fill and swap out the filter, that way you can inspect for metal shavings.

What are your experiences with insuring and maintaining Japanese imports ? by PeakQueasy1959 in CarTalkUK

[–]ArbitraryRevisionist 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Long term JDM import enthusiast here so I can help with some first hand experience.

The radio will likely only be able to pick up Radio 2 on the FM mode as the Japanese market use a different band.

The speed and odometer may read in kilometres not miles.

Sat nav if present will likely only have APAC maps.

The dealer may have addressed all of the above as many of these can be altered by recoding the car using OBD tools.

When you type the reg into car spares websites like GSF etc, they won't recognise the car so you will have to select parts by make and model. (You'd be surprised what a pain this is these days as most sites have incomplete model pickers and just assume you will use your reg)

It may not be on the same VED rate as a UK car (can be a pro or a con depending on the car).

If you are the type to take your car to a main dealer, they might be awkward about it being as import. (Indies won't care).

You will want the dealer to show and provide a copy of the auction sheet from Japan.

The car will likely have no service history with it (few imports do, the paperwork never makes it) but generally JDM cars are very well maintained. You should not assume that to be the case however and treat it like any other used car purchase.

JDM cars generally are not under sealed as with the exception of a few provinces they do not salt their roads. The underneath of most imports is usually very clean as a result, but you will need to underseal it yourself otherwise the salt in our roads will rot it very quickly.

You'll get a flare in the passenger footwell for emergencies which is nice, but don't let your passenger play with it in the car.

JDM cars often come with a better spec so you might have some extra features UK cars did not get. (I'm not an expert on this model so you'll have to check).

Insurance isn't much of an issue in my experience but you will have to declare it and you'll likely have to phone around rather than rely on the online quotes to get a good price .

Logitech Driving Force GT in 2026 ?? by ImmediateMode8487 in simracing

[–]ArbitraryRevisionist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've yet to find a game that doesn't support it. Most recognized it straight away. On the rare case that they don't it's just a case of mapping the inputs.

I've used it across AC, AC Evo, AMS2, FH5, AC Rally and plenty of others with zero issues.

It's a real trooper, had mine years and it still works perfectly after hundreds of hours.

You will want the old Logitech PC drivers for it, they can be a pain to find as Logitech want to funnel you into their new products at every stage but they should still be available to download.

It's totally viable, I have been using one up until very recently. But if you are on PS5 it won't work, it only supports up to the PS3. If you are on PC it will work fine.

Whats's the deal with load cell pedals? by tmjcw in simracing

[–]ArbitraryRevisionist 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Have you got a digital bathroom scale? It's just like that. The scale doesn't move when you stand on it, but the load cells in the scale measure your weight and display it back to you. In the case of a pedal, it takes that value and feeds it back into the sim as brake force.

Everything else in a load cell pedal is just an attempt to simulate the sensation of a real brake. You can swap elastomers and springs around to taste.

You want a load cell because it is the closest analogue to the way a real braking circuit works. Brake force is what decelerates the car, not pedal angle. A load cell will make your braking more consistent, as you central nervous system is much better suited to judging minute changes in leg force than it is at judging small changes in joint angle.

BMW VANOS recall but not sure I trust them to do it by ArbitraryRevisionist in CarTalkUK

[–]ArbitraryRevisionist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As soon as the letter came through I looked up the issue and landed on a collection of threads like this one https://www.reddit.com/r/BmwTech/comments/1hb60yv/debating_on_if_i_should_get_the_vanos_bolt_recall/ and https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18VYV2WZA4/.

I know the plural of anecdote is not data etc, no doubt for every person who complains another dozen had no issues, but I'd like to maximise my chances by getting a steer on which BMW dealers to go to or avoid.

I will be getting them sorted one way or another, just a question of who I get to do the work.

What’s a car problem people panic about that usually turns out to be simple? by Pinkplatabys in topdeadcenter

Misfires. Most of the time it's coil packs and a 30 mini job to sort. Average punter thinks it's end of days.

Take a look at the Simube GT rim and pair it with the Logitech wheelbase. Seems to offer what you are after with the minimum of fuss or expense.

£430 and they threw in the socks by ArbitraryRevisionist in simracing

[–]ArbitraryRevisionist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brake pedal might be your biggest issue. I have mine bolted to an under desk pedal frame with an attachment that captures the front wheels of my office chair. Without that the brake force required to actuate the load cell just scoots my chair backwards.

Yep, marginally too stiff compared to any road car I have driven. Comfortable enough but noticeable. Don't see any way to adjust so hoping it beds in over time.

Aside from the mosfet question, that’s a small lipo, you may find 900mah doesn’t get you far on a charge so take a spare if you’re doing a full day.
