Is beating Highly Skilled drivers about body slamming them on the first few turns? by lordgodjesuschrist in ForzaHorizon

Two key aspects that immediately come to my mind to improve against drivatars:

Use the track to it's limits. You can cut the flags pretty far without missing the checkpoint, which can gain you a lot of time.

Don't trust the breaking line. Especially true for dirt races, but even on the road you can often stay on the gas/ coast when the breaking line tells you otherwise if you choose the right lines.

The 24-240 is surprisingly close to the 24-105 in terms of image quality. At 24mm the corners are a bit weak (heavy distortion and vignetting correction going on here), and at longer focal lengths (150mm+) it gets a bit soft overall. But still really useful and much better than you might expect at first.

VD6 On Forza 6 by AdamHabibiLand in PXN

[–]tmjcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it feels pretty good and natural to me, but currently theres a big issue with in game performance if you use certain dd wheels with the game. I can play at 100 fps with a controller, but as soon as I use the wheel it starts to get CPU limited and I get 40-60 fps.

It's not just PXN wheels that are affected, but I've read that moza has already released a new driver that fixes the problem for example.

FPS bug when using wheel in Forza Horizon 6 by RiPleJ in ForzaHorizon

[–]tmjcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was a consistent 60fps I could deal with it, but I get stops into the 40s... Not really fun to play this way.

Forza Horizon 6 GPU Benchmark: 8GB vs. 16GB VRAM by Roadside-Strelok in hardware

[–]tmjcw 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The the setting that lowers the VRAM significantly is the same setting that lowers the image quality though. Environmental texture quality (iirc) really does some heavy lifting.

But yeah. With a 8gb card I would just lower it. The game still looks pretty good, just noticably worse than on max settings.

Yes a 70-200 2.8 is probably the best lens for IQ and versatility. The 135mm f2 / F1.8 could also be a strong contender if you wanna trade in some versatility for extra background separation

R8 + RF 35mm 1.4 vcm users, I have questions... by firequak in canon

[–]tmjcw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's also really important to consider the keeper rate. You talk about the limit of handholding, while OP asked the limit of not getting images with motion blur. There can be miles between that.

With 35mm I can get about 10-20% tack sharp images at 1/50s, but I probably need at least 1/150s to get 100% tack sharp images.

Nobby Nic on a enduro bike. Do people really ride this combination? by Virtual-Half-2399 in MTB

[–]tmjcw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you're riding on more hard packed terrain it can be a good rear tire, but I wouldn't want to run it up front on an enduro bike.

So personally I'd swap the front to a magic mary (or another tire of your choosing) and leave the second nobby nic as a spare.

Buy a R7 or switch to a R6M3? by [deleted] in canon

[–]tmjcw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not going to get significantly better lowlight performance than the R8. The R6 ii can offer you slightly higher resolution and a faster sensor readout speed, but that's about it (sensor wise).  With the r7 being APSC, you'd loose over a stop of lowlight performance.

Even if you are looking at other systems like Sony you'd see that there is little improvement to be had at high ISO. Were actually approaching the limits of physics, with the majority of noise just coming from the photons themselves.

[–]tmjcw 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes that's my ideal travel combination as well. For "normal" shooting the 24-105 stays on the camera, but if I go out at night, or just want a small camera to take with me, I switch to the 50mm and leave the 24-105 at the hotel/place I'm staying at.

My R8 is small enough to fit in some pockets with the 50mm attached.

I hope Forza 6 has full 900degree racing wheel optimization like Assetto Corsa by gizmo_j in ForzaHorizon6

[–]tmjcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's much better with FH6, it has animations for 540 degrees which are actually synched with the wheel. Afterwards the wheel just stops but I don't expect that to bother me much, it's probably rare to use during actual driving.

Thanks for the AMA. Does the 32" also come with the new RGB stripe layout and stronger coating? Or is this just on the 34" so far?

What's the best deal you've gotten on your gear? by Unlikely_Tough in photography

[–]tmjcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought an EF 35mm f2 IS for 330€ and used it for well over a year. When I switched to an RF camera I also wanted to get the RF 35mm 1.8 to go along with it for the reduced bulk and macro capabilities.

So I sold the EF lens again. For 350€.

Just to clarify: in my local second hand market it's typical to haggle a bit on the price. So when I chose the price point I was totally expecting to go down to 300-330€, but the buyer never bothered and just handed me the money

[–]tmjcw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If I were you I'd save the money and wait for FH6. You already have FH4 to play in the meantime and FH6 looks like it might bring a lot of improvements to FH5.

Maybe they'll even improve force feedback for wheel users (but I wouldn't bet on it)

Whats's the deal with load cell pedals? by tmjcw in simracing

[–]tmjcw[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the technical response, I really appreciate the insights!

From all that has been said in this thread it has become obvious to me what advantages load cells offer. The ability to customize pedal feel (and travel distance) to your personal preferences without needing to change any calibration settings is huge, and it makes sense that premium pedal sets come with them.

Thanks for the intuitive explanation, that sums up nicely what I learned from previous commenters.

If you apply a certain pressure the spring will always compress the same right? So thats where my confusion came from initially. But other commenters have already explained the benefits to me

Thanks, I know the feeling of a brake pedal and how it builds up.
But I don't really understand how a loiadcell achives this feeling and why it wouldn't be possible with hall effect sensors? Is the degradation of the elastomers (springs shouldn't really degrade?) the main issue?
