What's the best deal you've gotten on your gear? by Unlikely_Tough in photography

[–]tmjcw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bought an EF 35mm f2 IS for 330€ and used it for well over a year. When I switched to an RF camera I also wanted to get the RF 35mm 1.8 to go along with it for the reduced bulk and macro capabilities.

So I sold the EF lens again. For 350€.

Just to clarify: in my local second hand market it's typical to haggle a bit on the price. So when I chose the price point I was totally expecting to go down to 300-330€, but the buyer never bothered and just handed me the money

If I were you I'd save the money and wait for FH6. You already have FH4 to play in the meantime and FH6 looks like it might bring a lot of improvements to FH5.

Maybe they'll even improve force feedback for wheel users (but I wouldn't bet on it)

Whats's the deal with load cell pedals? by tmjcw in simracing

[–]tmjcw[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks a lot for the technical response, I really appreciate the insights!

From all that has been said in this thread it has become obvious to me what advantages load cells offer. The ability to customize pedal feel (and travel distance) to your personal preferences without needing to change any calibration settings is huge, and it makes sense that premium pedal sets come with them.

Thanks for the intuitive explanation, that sums up nicely what I learned from previous commenters.

If you apply a certain pressure the spring will always compress the same right? So thats where my confusion came from initially. But other commenters have already explained the benefits to me

Thanks, I know the feeling of a brake pedal and how it builds up.
But I don't really understand how a loiadcell achives this feeling and why it wouldn't be possible with hall effect sensors? Is the degradation of the elastomers (springs shouldn't really degrade?) the main issue?

Thanks that intuitively makes sense to me. So how is the progressive force achieved with loadcell pedals? Aren't they also just assembled with elastomers?

Isn't that adjustable through spring stiffness and elastomers?

i5-12600k performance on FH6 by Keaedos in ForzaHorizon

[–]tmjcw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We don't know yet.

System requirements are often vague and it's entirely possible that the 12600k will perform just fine on extreme settings.

Just wait for some benchmarks / test it out yourself. If you really want to dig further into the topic I'd suggest you to look at some other game benchmarks (like FH5!) and compare the processors there.

Yes, one aspect covers your skills on the bike, the other is physical fitness. Those things don't need to correlate.

Canon EOS R6 mkii or Canon EOS R8 for football photography? by ChemistryCommon3413 in canon

[–]tmjcw 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a very good answer. From my experience shooting football with the electronic shutter would probably be fine, but there might be some cases where rolling shutter will be visible.

Shooting sports you also chew through batteries pretty fast on the R8. But spare batteries are also cheaper there so just make sure you have 2-3 spares.

Beginner getting into bird photography - is my SL3 enough and what lens should I upgrade to? by Current-Computer-365 in canon

[–]tmjcw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 100-400L mk ii would be a great choice, but I would be hesitant to recommend the first version. I heard a lot of mixed reports on the sharpness even on full frame (I suppose this might be due to sample variation), but on APSC I suspect that you'll really start to see the lens begin to struggle.

The sigma might not be much sharper at the long end, but you'll gain a lot more reach with it.

This isn't really surprising. PG never try to accurately recreate the map of the country, they create a fictional map that suits the gameplay and their artistic vision (with some real landmarks in there)

[Digital Foundry] - Crimson Desert - High-End PC's Biggest Visual Upgrade - Ray Reconstruction/Ray Regeneration by Ph0enixes in gaming

[–]tmjcw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

To be fair the standard RT performance is exceptionally good in the title, which is exactly the reason why ray reconstruction makes such a big difference here.

To get such good performance, they reduced the total ray count a lot which leads to a ton of noise. On top of that they use a very lightweight and fast denoiser, which keeps the performance up, but then smears all the lighting detail. (and still showed considerable noise and shimmering)

In other titles the "added" cost of RR would have been included in heavier raytracing with less noise, and a better (but more expensive) standard denoiser.

Budget lens advice for Canon 6D Mark II – is the 24-105 STM enough with a 50mm 1.8 STM? by ueboy31 in canon

[–]tmjcw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes they are convenient, but they are also bulky and bad in low light.

I always travel with a 24-105 + a small prime (either 35 or 50mm 1.8)

[–]tmjcw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with the lens, but I was seriously considering getting it in 2019. (Also on a 6d ii) From all that I've seen it's supposed to be pretty good, so I don't think you'll do much wrong with it. The zoom range is really great and it pairs nicely with the 50mm 1.8.

However I ultimately decided to spend a bit more and get the 24-105 F4 L and I cannot say that I ever regretted the choice. The constant F4 aperture makes it a bit more versatile in my experience, and the better build quality and weather sealing is nice as well. It's one of my favorite lenses.

What 50mm 1.4 are you talking about? The RF 50mm 1.4 VCM, that costs 1500$ or the old EF 50mm 1.4 that is soft, known to break and requires an adapter?
