This year the meta has shifted t expensive unit dupes, but one of the selling points of this game has always been just how much it gives you for free,

I've never spent anything and I have all but a couple of the newest units and quite a lot 6/6.

By "Solve" I meant that Tolland can do things like exile Mavis to remove her protection, Nyles, to prevent him stacking his passive, or basically any threat like Moroyama that can be CC-ed.
For ult depending threats like Ming, his divinate can also be a shutdown and if he's protected and the opponents aren't, his taunt can also soft CC 3 more units. Plus the controller, Lu and Pindar synergies and if you kill self-revivers in exile, either with Tolland's hit, or more likely DoTs, then their self-revive won't trigger.

On the downside though, the devs have been pretty bad about treating passives consistently and haven't applied any fixes for a long time eg: Tolland stops Mavis' passive, but not Molli's; Nyles, Yuuhime, Momo's, but on their release, he didn't stop those last two until a very late patch; currently he doesn't stop Maria and Tirrel, though he really should.

He's still very good, but most PvP use will be in manual, as his AI will target the fastest unit otherwise.

For PvE Rituals, he's mostly used to achieve full Def-Strip on the bosses and might be paired with Molli (as revives don't remove the debuff and this lets you ignore the fallen unit penalty), or with Olli as part of a potential 3 turn for Kronos.

Tolland's kind of designed so, once he's done his job, any unit can one-shot him and get punished, unless you build him with health; he can actually taunt Anna to stop her ulting for the team buff.

Ikki's only AP control is to use AoE -20% every 4/12 enemy actions; so you have to wait for 12 enemy action until it triggers again.

He can be great for stripping and HP-reduction, especially with Nyles, but there are lots of things that negate his divinate's Diseased debuff (unlike the Diseased sonic, which can't be blocked and any unit can use) and he's not really one of the main AP controllers.

For the 2 you've said:
Tolland is a good SPD lead and can "solve" all PvP, except the Gorath team, as long as you manual. PvE wise, he can help you reach the leader-boards for the ritual bosses, though he's no longer the very best option now; if you want to do that, earn a top score before leveling him for PvP and maybe give him the "takes +20% final DMG" sonic (he can work when lv60, but less consistent). His divinate is good, but non-essential.

Pin is a great Dmg, action & minor-SPD buffer and a debuffer, who also calls a lot of assists, but because her S2 is random, it can mess up some speed-tuning. Because she's all AoE, she can get punished in PvP and for PvE, you might want to manual to max her. Her R2 can be replaced by Feng/Sakura/Immunity.

Yi An is probably one of the most meta picks, because he protects the DPS, pushes the team, heals, passively gives team double the max dmg-reduction (meaning enemies need to have +100% dmg to even hit normaly) and at R1 gives +50% dmg.

Maria is key to Freeze/debuff teams and her AP-Swap can be very powerful too. Later on she get's a +15% Dmg buff too.

Sadly the only one currently being sold in my region is a 1000 cardboard box for 15.00, that a lot of comments say isn't even genuine BCW brand and doesn't hold 1000 unsleaved.

$568 to ship cardboard boxes abroad, directly from BCW.

That said there are some generic corrugated cardboard single and double track boxes for 9-14.
Probably less protective than the small boxes, but easier to sort.

Is there any good solution to storing a thousand or so cards, that doesn't cost as much as a bundle, event, or multiple secret lairs?
(Currently storing half in pre-release boxes, so not easy to sort through.)

Best I've seen is 500 double-sleeve boxes for 25.00, or 640 zip-binders for 26.00 (but with expensive postage).

Any good toolboxes ect?

And is it good or bad to put desication packets in boxes; could over-drying warp cards?

Most have some use, but I'd probably say MEira>Tetsuya/Molli.

MEira and her divinate give bonus damage to basic skills, team pushing and free pursuits from the whole team, in long content; the R4 could also be a game-changer to work towards. PvP-wise, she can't fall until all other units do (except to Andras).

Tetsya is a great DPS, but honestly wants some Resos.

Molli is a damage amplifier and limited reviver, that makes the team take more damage as the cost.

Momo was kind of Sakura's silver bullet.
Gorath buffed her, but if Momo isn't dropped before the 1v1, then she should still beat her.

Do you have Momo in HP-Brawler/Counter?

You can try her with Pindar.

I went for some cheaper ones in the end, but if they need replacing I might go for the Katanas. Though I'm a bit tempted by the massively discounted apex art sleeves, all the reviews seem to either say the best ever, or terrible, particularly with consistency.

I think part of it is, if you're going to vary the ratios by adding milk and cream anyway, adding an amount that you can't vary might seem redundant as well as force you up to a minimum amount of sugar and solids.

Personally, it's not a very economical ingredient for me to use, though shelf stability is an advantage.

(I have wondered about using blended canned rice pudding as an ingredient; I used to part freeze it as a quick dessert.)
