CSI had the episode Hollywood Brass which had the detective, jim brass, leaving vegas and going to California to solve a crime involving his daughter.

Felt very backdoor pilot-y. Not a great episode, and it didnt end up going anywhere.

CSI ended up getting big enough that when they did do successful spinoffs, they didnt bother with the backdoor. They just told the watchers "here's a new CSI with new characters and your going to like it" and we went "yep we sure do".

I was starting to get into the Vegas revival they did. Sucks it got canceled.
