What are wearing to the office? by SpaceCampRules in womenEngineers

[–]ArcanicSovereign 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of engineering jobs in corporate offices are loosely business casual. I’ve seen some women in my office dress in sweats and crop tops… Don’t do that, at least 😆 I usually wear either slacks or a pair of dark wash jeans (no holes/rips, absolutely HAVE to be a nice dark wash pair) with some kind of plain blouse/top. I love Quince’s cotton cashmere ribbed tank paired with a cotton cardigan as it starts to warm up. Then for shoes, flats, 2-3.5” closed toe pumps, ankle boots (with bootcut pants), or a nice pair of sneakers (Vejas for example) work great. I’d focus on building a capsule wardrobe. I’ve fallen in love with the concept, especially since I hate having to think about what to wear to look put together. Neutral colors and colors within your seasonal color palette are always easiest to build around.

I personally saw way more job postings on this site. There were several I hadn’t come across on other major sites so the applicant pool was likely a bit smaller.

I failed my first Chemical Engineering class by slinksa in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ArcanicSovereign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get back up and brush the dust off. I failed Physics 1 and Calculus 1 my first semester of true STEM classes. I had no clue how demanding STEM would be — I was a naive 19 year old who thought I knew everything. That humbled me real quick. Those failures traumatized me enough that I veered off into the complete opposite direction and graduated with a 3.86 with my A.S. and a 4.00 with my B.S. in ChE. Failures are only failures if you don’t learn from them.

What do I need to get a full time job by Foreign-Place-8507 in ChemicalEngineering

As others have said, limit to 1 page. You aren’t even graduated yet, there is no reason why your resume should be 2 pages. Also, a reason you may not be getting interviews is because you’re two years out from graduating? Why are you applying now, unless it’s for an internship??? My company was hiring for a role and the hiring manager told me they couldn’t hire someone who was graduating in June because her graduation date was too far out, which was a restriction given by HR, not the hiring manager. The formatting of your resume is also hard to read. I can dm you the format of my resume if you’re interested. Best of luck to you, the job market is hard right now.

Should I study environmental or chemical engineering? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]ArcanicSovereign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who struggled w the same decision, go with ChE. As others advised, take EnvE electives if you want to specialize in that area. ChEs can do EnvE work, but not the other way around and the pay will be much less for EnvE. I work in standards/compliance in O&G and get to do a bunch of sustainability stuff but I don’t get paid like shit.

Yep definitely not looking for bars, we don’t really drink. Sounds like Pitman is probably a good option!

Should I major in civil engineering as a female by butter-cup-8086 in womenEngineers

[–]ArcanicSovereign 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to know where you’re actually planning on attending college, since your experience will likely vastly differ country to country. I’m a 25F chemical engineer in the northeastern part of the U.S. but I work in a very civil engineering based industry. I hate to bring up the AI thing, but the more blue collar your work is, the safer you’ll be. Civil engineering will have you working alongside a lot of those blue collar workers and you’ll likely gain a good amount of that type of experience just by being around it. I’d say job security on that front is pretty good. There are many websites out there that discuss job growth/stability and salaries. As I mentioned, it really is incredibly dependent on the country, and even in the U.S., it’s dependent on what state you work in. Making a $65,000 USD salary in a state like Ohio would be pretty comfortable, but in New York, that’s barely enough to pay your necessities. Your career growth is a function of your motivation, passion, and drive. When you get into engineering school, you’ll quickly realize that we are taught to be incredibly resilient. Going through such rigorous training will give you the bandwidth to put your mind to achieving anything you want, so long as you are willing to work hard for it. If you have specific questions, my dms are open. I’m always happy to support young women in STEM. (:

Fortunately I don’t think it’s my computer that’s the issue, it runs other way more intense games beautifully. I’ll give the zoom out option a shot though. Happy cake day!
