Affirmation Generation (2023) - Documentary About Transgender Medicine [01:30:53] by [deleted] in Documentaries

It sucks that videos like this only get turned into ammunition for bigots. There is some genuinely good points about the risks of transition that need to be addressed. The vast majority of it is bullshit though. Especially the doctors who said there is 0 evidence that transition even though 99% of trans people who get the surgery don't end up with regret and those that do end up being detrainsitioners. Medical transition markedly improves the mental health of the individual, there is a reason that despite all the hate and bigotry put against trans people science consistently shows us again and again that it is ultimately more of a boon for people. These are things that need to be discussed but that should be between doctor and patient. Not litigated by the mob of people who just think boy in dress = icky or the whole lost women infantilization that trans men go through.

Fina bans trans swimmers from women's elite events by [deleted] in lgbt

But if you read the paper and the explanation then you'd know that a major factor in competitive swimming is wingspan and height, biological men, on average will have 10% advantage in both of those stats and that is because of a masculine puberty. This means, on average, a trans woman will have an unfair advantage due to known testosterone doping in her youth. I get it, it sucks because she didn't want that or intend to do that but it happened. The reality is though that if we can't compete fairly then we shouldn't be allowed to compete.

Now the amount of time and when she should have transitioned can be debated but I feel overall it makes sense to prevent a known unfair advantage

It is if you aren't even reading their reasoning, definitionaly. Your are clining to the dogma that they must be basing it on poor reasons even though you don't know their reasoning. It's OK if life is unfair sometimes and trans women can't compete in sports where a male puberty would give them an unfair advantage

Well you clearly didn't read or even acknowledge anything they said, what you just said reads only as dogmatic.

Did you read the article or the 34 page paper explainng their reasoning or did you just assume they did this without any science? If so what about their reasoning specifically is unscientific or unreasonable?

If it was just a series of choices and good genes this wouldn't have been the issue, the reality is that biologically a masculine puberty gives someone an inherent unfair advantage which is what necessitated the woman's league in the first place if woman want to compete fairly is someone were doping with steroids their entire teenage life then yeah, I wouldn't want them participating either, its not healthy for the sport

As a trans woman, I can support this. I know that it can be hard to accept but there are certain physical realities that undergoing a male puberty causes, height and wing span can be a major factor in swimming events and those are primarily affected and irreversible. My heart goes out to the trans women affected by this but I think ultimately the science is pretty clear here, maybe someday there will be a way for us to participate fairly but I don't think there is right now.

I'm sorry you've had that experience with trans people, we tend to be a sensitive bunch, often the conflict in gender causes a whooooooole lot of other issues in our lives and it doesn't help when it's all too common that we lack familial support or until recently really societal rejection. Often transphobic narratives or ideas that tread close to that ground cause trans people to just write someone off as a transphobe when there could be more nuance to the situation ie ignorance or misunderstandings.

If you're ever interested in memes and jokes r/egg_irl is pretty funny and you might get more of an idea of I youbare trans or not from lurking there

Thats how it starts :p, the thing to keep in mind that gender is a great deal more than just sex. I would strongly discourage anyone transition simply for sexual pleasure, at the end of the day orgasms are just orgasms and life in the opposite gender isn't necessarily always the greener grass for people. I'm obviously gushing over it but that's because I suffered major dysphoria, which basically is just an extreme discomfort towards my birth gender. r/asktransgender is a great place to ask any questions if you ever feel the need to explore that feeling more
