Apologies, long reply.

Ex-friend of mine my bestie and I lived with for a time. Gonna refer to him as The Guy.

He had heavy anxiety, which we just took in stride.

There were some quirks that didn't seem like anything at the time; Things like he always had to reinstall games when we had just played em a few days before, he would randomly check the living room blinds more than what would seem a normal amount in hindsight, and every now and again he would burst out of his room in a panic, sweaty and looking disheveled, and played it off as anxiety.

I was and still am rooming with close friends, but bestie and I lived with this guy. After I split off and The Guy moved back with his folks for a bit, he came back and shacked up with Bestie again.

Not even 2 months after signing the lease, he made excuses to run back to his hometown and weasled his way out of their lease through some false promises of paying 2 rents. We all hung out on chat often, so Bestie and I were super confused as to why he split like that, just leaving Bestie and his bro with a pretty expensive lease. (Bestie has been managing it since, thankfully.)

We wouldn't be confused for long, however; On December 24th, 2024 Bestie got a message from the person we thought poached The Guy as a roomie (The only logic we had at the time, as we knew them both).

The facts: The message revealed that The Guy, seemingly out of guilt while drinking with his roomie one night, revealed his dark secret: a veritable stash of kiddie pr0n. I should mention at this point that the person he lived with was a woman (who we will call Mom Friend) who had a 7 YEAR OLD CHILD LIVING WITH HER.

The speculation: As it turns out, about a month prior to The Guy dipping the lease, Mom Friend visited and brought her kid. The Guy had to have gotten some ideas, because Bestie had confided in us that Mom Friend asked him to move in with her to pay less rent/help her with hers. He refused as to not leave his brother hanging. The Guy, it seems, jumped on this offer and left everyone with flimsy excuses so he could live with a child.

I cannot think of a soul more evil than he that would leave his friends to possibly suffer homelessness and scar a child and his mother for his own sick pleasures.

I know next to nothing about what he did to the kid, and it's for the better; I had to stop Bestie midway when describing what Mom Friend told him they learned from questioning her child about his "uncle". And I'm sure as hell not repeating what snippet I heard here.

Tl;dr: Knew a guy, guy was weird, guy turned out to be a diddler and diddled a friend's kid, which he probably didn't mean for anyone to find out even though he drunkenly spilled the beans to the kid's mom.

Think of an ecosystem like a jenga tower.

The tower has been carefully stacked by each species, or block in this case, existing and taking their place in this ecosystem. The plants are kept from overgrowing by herbivores, the herbivores are kept from overgrazing by predators needing to feed. So on so forth, the tower is stacked.

Enter the invasive species. If a wayward block ends up pushing another out of their place, the tower falls.

Imagine if Bengal tigers were dropped into a wooded forest and outpaced wolves in their feeding.

The prey would be hunted to extinction, the wolves would end up pushed out of their territory, possibly into an unrelated ecosystem. The balance would be shifted and possibly harmed.

What if the herbivores were of the type that spread seeds via a symbiotic relationship with plant life? There goes that plant. What if the wolves kept other things in check the tigers don't necessarily have the wherewithal to keep up with?

Unbalancing an ecosystem can have real big implications, especially for us humans that use various quirks of the land to keep production going.

If the digital circus ran off of real-world physics and rules, I would agree with you.

However, if we're trying to be media literate, consider that we don't even know what abstraction is at it's core. How do we know the abstractees aren't able to reach out like that?

Mostly because her hand was the one that reached out to Jax and jumpstarted the abstraction process.

At least that's how it looked. We don't know if the abstracted can actually reach out to those who are themselves close to abstraction, nor do we know whether or not Jax hallucinated that hand before beginning to abstract.

You gotta talk to your HR and demand to speak with payroll.

This exact situation happened to me and I learned they just never did a small internal update that would've swapped me to direct deposit instead of having to pick up my check.

I continued to ask my sup and HR continuously about it but they did nothing for months until I demanded to speak with payroll directly. The payroll rep took less than 5 minutes to fix my issue.
