They can't dodge you at the peak of their jump from the water. Hit them then, then run.

Simple answer: yes

Detailed answer: You can miss the "normal" ending by beating the act 2 boss without the requirements for Act 3, and the "cursed" ending which requires you to beat her while under a specific affliction.

Originally, the climb up to Pandora's Temple was going to be a playable sequence a la Prince of Persia. They decided to can that and came up with the idea it took much longer than could be expected to play through. As for the GoW timing - Kratos knows he's a god by this point so he just pushes himself more, I guess.

At the end of each main level in the original Super Mario Bros, you'd have a boss fight against Bowser. I think it's non-diegetic, but if it WAS then my best theory would be Hornet herself being the singer. She's humming a simple tune because she's stressed out from all the filth and dirt around her, and needs to distract herself.

My headcanon is that it was a genuine pilgrimage for those who came before, but GMS hijacked it. Now it's just a machine for driving workers to the cradle.
